Has anyone thought of this?

I Want Wing Commander VI before my computer get obsolete...

(Damn, I wish I had money when they release this new WC to buy a new more powerfull computer)

Writing this on a AMD-K6 2

Considering that WC6 or WCP2 or P3 will not be released or made for at least 2 years at the very earliest (and probably a good deal longer) I think you will have upgraded your computer by then.

Shhh... you'll make Earthworm crawl out to yell that it's not an add-on ;).

It's an interesting question, really. Technically, SO is indeed fully stand-alone because it doesn't require WCP to run. Thus, it is not an add-on.
But at the same time, its storyline desperately requires WCP - the storyline is anything but standalone. I mean, to a person who only looks at SO, the storyline would suck. It doesn't contain enough background info to be able to stand on its own two feet.
So, I guess what it comes down to is this - if you consider the storyline an important aspect of a game, then SO is an add-on to WCP. If you consider gameplay ahead of everything else, then SO is indeed just another standalone shoot-em-up.

I don't see how WCSO desperately needs WCP for its story to make sense. It's no different from WC1 and WC2 in that respect.

I agree.

You've got a capital ship returning to home space after handling some alien force. Some of her pilots are transferred to a new type of ship, which, while on her maiden voyage, encounters more of that alien.

While knowledge of the WCP storyline offers some enhancement to that of WCSO, the latter is by no means incomprehensible without WCP. The introduction to WCSO sees to that.

Hmm, this is interesting, if WCPSO does not need WCP to run, it is strange that the SO is not available, but yet there is a download of the first episode. But then I read that the SO download is meant as a demo. Question is, is that intended to demo WCP or SO or both, and why. If SO is not available for download or unavailable on the shelves in stores, whats the freaking point? Would it be that since the OSI pages are old, that they overlooked that, or are they trying to fool people? I just dont see the logic in all this at all! OR, is it like how Lucas Arts is doing with their Star Wars stuff, nothing of Star Wars is on DVD, but they are waiting to finish the rest of the episodes, then put out on DVD. This is getting way too confusing! But a more important question is, why would they make the missions available for free to download, but only for a certian amount of time, then release a Gold edition, and only put out a few copies of that, but still make the first episode available and keep everyone from offering those episodes of SO? What the heck is going on here? Why wont they let people offer the missions that were available on their site? The saga continues.

WCSO with the first episodes is now a demo for Prophecy Gold. Originally I believe they had intended for it to remain free. But then that changed, probably because EA wanted to make a quick buck. Either way, I'm not complaining. Prophecy Gold has a lovely box, some came with a map, and the manual is great too.

I forgot - EA did rerelease Prophecy as part of a bundled package that included Blade Runner and Dune. (No, it didn't come with the SO missions).

That would suggest that EA needed a boost of income either due to the lack of sales of WCPSO or to help their situation in getting UO to a better point. It would not suprise me that they used the WCP Gold to try to boost income for their so called money maker UO!

Sory, i'm a newby. Been playing WC for 10 years, but now i came to the final conclusion : I´ts over. You better face it Sirs, without Roberts, there will be no new WC games. And if by a miracle a new one comes out, i bet it won't have the same magic. I don´t know everything about WC, to say the truth there are still a couple of games i havent played yet (let's just say that in Portugal WC is not very popular), but i can tell you this, Origin has finished creating worlds (except the ones with elfs and stuff).

That same thing recently happened with the Star Wars EU, they added the Yuuzhan Vong because the Imps were defeated, but how lame is that? The real enemies were the Imperials.

I agree that just the 'adding new races' idea is quite overdone these days, but something had to come up. But I've just started reading The New Jedi Order, and I find these Yuuzhan Vong quite interesting. Hmm, the way they hate technology make them almost extreme Retros. :) Anyway, the Imperials in the SW universe are not the same Imps that we see in the movies, they just have different ideals to the New Republic, and, some of them at least, even have a sense of honour and nobility, despite their pro-human stance.

Anyway, I just find it interesting that at least the Yuuzhan Vong don't seem to follow the trend of new 'baddie' races being insect-like. I've recently started following the Roughneck Chronicles (Starship Troopers) and find that both universes are quite similar, except maybe that WC follows pilots and R:STC follows (duh!) troopers. Both Confed and SICON find themselves fighting 'bugs' for survival.

Heck, even one shot of the Valley Forge (the Roughnecks' carrier) reminded me of the Fralthi from WC1!

Uh, I had several ideas on these three universes, but this is all I remember right now...

Umm.. you know Roberts left Origin like five years ago, right? :) WC didn't die after or because he left Origin.

Origin need not be the one to make the next WC game. But again I'll point out what I said earlier. Origin didn't just go insane and stop making WC. They like WC. However EA's directorate "needed" to entrench itself in the fantasy massively multiplayer genre to compete with things like Everquest or Asheron's Call. Because of the success of UO, Origin became their fantasy mmp arm. Origin received just enough money to expand UO and do UO2. Origin was working on new, but they money didn't exist and so it had to be cancelled.

Now we all know things change. Space sims in general are in a slump. But you should be aware turn based strategy and 4X genre games are coming back. They were dead for most of the 90's, but they're going to be a hot genre in a year and for the next several years after that. Things run in cycles, history repeats itself. When space sims fall back into favor, the money will reset itself. The WC license still exists, and I have no doubt EA will someday feel the need to take up WC again, just like they felt of fantasy mmp's in 2000.

I agree, the Nephilins idea is very weak. I mean, they tried to come up with the "prophecy" theory and stuff but... it just didn't sounded right. A nice idea would have been that the Kilrati had found a new race and become allied with them. Something like the Wing Commander / Star Wars crossover story "the Imperial March" (wich by the way is very cool, in a what if kind of way). One more thing, now that there will be no more WC games, why not to make an Open GL or a 3DFX patch to WCIII and IV ? They did it with Quake...

I doubt it'd look a whole lot better. Besides, it's just the graphics. You should be playing WC for WC, not for its appearance.

Personally, I felt that the Prophecy thing actually detracted from the Nephilem story... that's just me, though. Basically, prophecies are too... well, too 'magical'. Even if this Prophecy is steeped in fact, it still seems (to me) very much out of place in a sci-fi universe.

Well I'm sory, but my Wing Commander III just doesn't work on Windows ME (someone told the ME doesn't use DOS anymore, I don't understand a thing about Windows). Wouldn't it be nice to use some kind of patch? I mean, what are you going to do? Buy an extra hard-disk a install MS-Dos ?
