GOG Updates Classics (Slightly) (April 2, 2025)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
The team at GOG recently announced that Wing Commander I & II and Privateer 2 would be joining their GOG Preservation Program. Now they've issued updated versions of both releases which gives us a look at what this actually means!

The answer seems to be 'not a lot, but not nothing'. The patch notes are reprinted below. All of the "verified" and "validated" items just mean they checked to see if the game still loads, so those aren't particularly interesting (or even accurate in the case of Privateer 2, which suffers fro crippling slowdown issues in space). But there are a couple of gems in here, including the addition of the French version of Privateer 2 the re-enabling of Wing Commander I's transfer utilities and Wing Commander II's installer options.

Privateer 2: The Darkening:

Added French localization.
Validated stability.
Verified compatibility with Windows 10 and 11.
Verified Cloud Saves support.

Wing Commander I:

Added a DOSBox menu option to transfer pilot data to Secret Missions 1 and 2, enriching the campaign experience.
Made DOSBox config adjustments to improve overall performance.
Validated stability.
Verified compatibility with Windows 10 and 11.
Verified Cloud Saves support.

Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi

Introduced a DOSBox menu option for in-game sound and graphical configuration.
Adjusted conventional memory size based on community suggestions for better system performance.
Validated stability.
Verified compatibility with Windows 10 and 11.
Verified Cloud Saves support.

It's also the last day for their annual Spring Sale. Get the WC series 60% off right now!

That's right. The big difference is that Wing Commander II was designed to have character transfers from the start so the process is handled inside the game. Wing Commander I wasn't, so to transfer a character to another campaign you have to use external programs that came with the addons.

id be nice if they added the kilrathi saga andd patched it, but EA probably did something stupid related to copyright for never distributing them or even the free PCGamer magazine release

As someone that worked bridging the EA/GOG stuff back when this started... anything stupid is absolutely GOG's fault. They were absolutely incompetent when it came to communication. (They absolutely had the option to use the Kilrathi Saga version.)

I am part of GoG's Insider program, the so called Core Community, a group of 2500+ (last I counted) users with significant investment in the platform (be it number of games, community engagement or some other factor). They run ideas and prototypes through us and, obviously, probably dont want me to share details.

However, they also listen to feedback by this community group. For example, I have pushed for the removal of Daggerfall Unity from the store due to various maintenance and organizational issues, others chimed in and a few months later, that title is correctly gone. There are various other examples, but I digress.
Anyway, as a member of said group, I have raised this issue in the internal Discord. If there are any other insiders here, I would ask you to also show your support. And for anyone else --- Let's wait and see what happens. I am certain LOAF's ear remains open 😇 and the CIC would be willing to help.

I'm always happy to help! I don't think anyone we worked with to get all this started with EA in the first place is there anymore, so please pass along that we're here to help.
