french WC movie opinions

NoRemorse

Rear Admiral
I've just found this:
-----------------------
Scenario:
Tres classique (guerre intergalactique).
------------------------

If you do not speak french - I know, this is a quite difficult language, this is what they think about it:
- scenario without imagination
- SFX not really extraordinary
- bad actors
- vessel design ridiculous, flightsuits shabby
- and too much american "clichés"

Well, I do not share those opinions. But in France, you know, nowadays there is a kind of paranoia: everybody want to ban all the american goods... that is silly, because have you ever seen a french movie ? I mean an actual french movie ? That is a pain in the arse !

I don't know... you look like a specialist so I have to agree with you...
Just one more: I've read too that WC movie was a gay movie...

A specialist? About the only thing I specialize in is keeping the wife happy! (and she is very happy at the moment!) What did you read that from that the WC movie was a gay movie?

The WC movie isn't gay.

As for French movies... we generally don't get any in the US <G> (Although they did show a bunch of Eric Rohmer movies downtown a while back).

Hum... foreign movies have to be good movies to be released in the US...

Lately, look at Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and before that, Life is Beautiful... they are good movies!!

Yet, do not think that Hollywood producers and directors do not watch French movies... The Birdcage, with Robin Williams and Gene Hackman, was adapted from a French movie with Michel Serrault, La Cage aux Folles...
Similarly... there's apparently an American version of the French movie Le dîner de cons being produced...

There are really amazing French movies, old and modern...
In the old ones, my parents could tell you more, but they would certainly mention Les Enfants du Paradis and Quai des Brumes...
Humoristic movies such as La grande vadrouille or Les Visiteurs have become classics, and French directors have already shown their talent by directing recent movies such as Alien IV (Jean-Pierre Jeunet) and Enemy at the Gates (Jean-Jacques Annaud)...

So NO, you can't say that porn movies is the best France has to offer... (and IMHO, French porn movies suck pretty bad... but that's another story.. ;))

As for the French public not liking Wing Commander, well... you can't expect people that are highly unfamiliar with the Wing Commander universe (WC is not that popular in France) to immediately *looove* Wing Commander.
As LOAF said, the movie could stand alone i.e. no absolute need of contextual information from the games... it just turns out the story did not appeal to the French public... (and to much of the rest of the world... now what general idea does that give you of the movie? :)).

There have been some good french movies, like La Boum staring Sophie Marceau. Also Les Visiteurs was recently remade with the original 2 main actors as a movie called Just Visiting. Small world, non?

That's mainly because american people don't like films with subtitles.
I am sure you saw some french movies that were acted in English and with some american actors.
Like "The Professional" and "The Messenger".

*I've* seen a bunch of French movies... because I used to live in France... but you're making it sound like Americans are horrible people for not liking movies with subtitles -- but that 'fact' doesn't seem to have any basis behind it...

Movies with subtitles don't bother me. Dragonball Z subs, Das Boot, Return of the Jedi, all of those I like.

And I think I speak for all of us when I say it's stupid French movies made by stupid French people I dislike. There *is* a difference.

It's always been the assumption that your average person will prefer a movie in his own language -- I don't think there's any proof of that, but it seems like a reasonable assumption.

It has nothing to do with being an American, though.

No, no, that is not what I meant ! You're just not used to see movies with subtitles.
In France most of the movies are dubbed in French. So most of French people don't like to see subtitled movies too.
