Fralthra WC2 Question

My question is where exactly are the AMG's located on the Fralthra because it seems that no matter which way you are facing it. Up down left right so on it can always shoot it's AMG's at you so it made me wonder where they were it they could it you from any angle.

The Ships Database is a good resource for this kind of stuff, although I'm not quite sure which are the AMGs and which are the flak turrets. I think the last time I looked these over it seemed that the double-mounts were the AMGs, but it's definitely up for debate... as is to some extent the actual number of weapons, which differ markedly in some cases between the game and documentation.

I'm not sure it's relevant in a purely gaming sense though, as I'm unclear whether WC2's 2D engine measures specific weapon arcs in the sense that the later 3D games would. At the very least, it's certainly not as precise as the latter.

I've been thinking about it, and a different question came to mind where did the AMGs go after the WC2 era I've read the ships database and it says they are still on some of the big capships like the Vesuvius class. But you never see them used after the WC2 era. And I know that there are several major Capship to Capship battles in WC3,4 but they don't look like they use the AMGs at all.

If memory serves me...

WC2 is the era of phase shielding and only certain weapons were able to either bypass (torpedo) or significantly batter down (AMG) phase shields.

By WC3, a "phase shield penetration" technology had been developed for fighter weapons, allowing them to affect phase shields like normal shields (definitely a retcon, but a reasonable one for returning to WC's original formula of fighters able to duke it out with cap ships).

Also, in WC3, they DO have AMGs.. it's just that, like the rest of the energy weaps, they're no longer big, chunky spherical weapon blasts (personally I miss the HELL out of the huge flashing purple PTC ball ;) ). When you're playing WC3 and WC4, the AMG gun blasts are the slow, huge, long yellow lines.

You'll notice that, when one of those hits you, your shields go away...right then. One more and you're dead

That would be because they radically changed the AMGs - rather than one big ship-killing bolt, its a fairly rapid firing heavy cannon. It'll still rip through fighters like nobodies business - in fact its more dangerous than the old version, because theres more of it to avoid, but it now takes a while to kill a capital ship, actually making for better battles since more is happening. Its the gun which fires big yellow bolts.

There's nothing "retroactive" about it in WC3. :) The retcon is that the Wing Commander Action Stations novel explains that WC1 also had phase shielding, and that the weapons/shield technology comparison goes in cycles. As you can see in Prophecy, we're back to standard guns being practically unable to penetrate phase shields (larger ones like the Devastator's main plasma gun can however).

Personaly, since its been a least a year since i've played WC2, i THINK the AMGs were mounted at the frount. Sorry for the inacurracies
