Four Weeks Until the Birthday Party! (July 13, 2013)

We're now just four weeks away from the Wing Commander CIC's 15th Birthday! Preparations are getting rolling in earnest, and we can't wait to party with you. Everything comes to a head on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 7:00 pm EDT (4:00 pm PDT and 11:00 pm GMT). Since the party straddles a weekend this year, we're excited that many of our Asian and Australians friends will be able to make it on Sunday morning. Festivities will be held in our IRC chatroom, #Wingnut. Newcomers can easily join through the web interface and start chatting right away. There'll be trivia contests, prizes and special CIC features! You can even RSVP and invite your friends via our Facebook page.

While we're talking about the website, this is also a good opportunity to point out a few site improvements that have been implemented over the last few weeks. Like all the other cool websites out there, we've grabbed a shortened URL: http://wcne.ws Try it out, it works! Right now you'll see this pop up in our Twitter feed. Our menu interface has also been tweaked. The red "News" flyout has been completely revamped into a "Resources" menu in order to provide quicker access to a variety of WCNews sections. We'll continue to refine the menu system and improve the site layout as we go forward!

I might be in Texas that weekend (not Austin, unfortunately) but I'll bring my tablet to join in the festivities. I'm looking forward to it, last years was great!

It was really because once it dawned on us that we could do it with a real existing top level domain without abbreviating anything at all, how could we pass that up?! Only "youtu.be," "del.icio.us" and just small handful of others work so well. "goo.gl" just isn't as cool. I can't believe LinkedIn doesn't own "Linked.In!" And there has actually already been one instance so far where the three extra characters allowed us to tweet an entire headline without abbreviating. :)

A third of the CIC staff lives in Europe. The event involves a countdown to the exact anniversary moment that the CIC opened 15 years ago. This time was chosen in 1998 in order to make it the most attendable for the most people. This year it happens to be on a Saturday night, so we expect really good attendance from our European visitors.
