If you're one of three people who don't know WTH SO is, check here and come back:

(I left the Big V out 'cause it's really more of a WCIV ship :))

Thanks for looking :D

PLUNKETT

I vote for the Plunkett. All the way, man. That is what cruisers should look like.

Plus, they're pretty formidable :cool:

I'm really deciding between the Murphey and the Plunkett, but, in this case, I think I'm gonna go witht he Plunkett too.

(Although I really thought the Murphey was a relatively good escort destroyer!)

Well, I'm way in the minority here, but I would have to vote for the Hades. Not as much firepower as the Plunkett, but much more versatile, and its fighters make it more powerfull.

Best, Raptor

Plunketts

Gotta love them 'battleship-style turrets of the plunkets. Now, Only if the captains learn to fire them at things OTHER than fighters or the center of capships. A plunkett took down Cerebus once while trying to shoot up a wing of Skates. It's like in SO2 where you can use 2 Fralthi's Antimatter guns to destroy each other by flying between them.

But no, Does anyone realize that the Plunkets look *a lot* like Freespace Fenris/Leviathan?

Anyway, off topic but, In Freespace...
Destroyer=Carrier/Dreadnaught
Corvette= Cruiser
Cruiser= Frigate/destroyer

WTF?

Also, Has anyone realized that a single Devestator packs more firepower than Midway minus that over-sized nightllight it carries?

That can't possibly true, since the Midway's firepower includes multiple Devestators. <G>

well... the combined output of all the lasers should equal that of the plasma cannon (25 turrets * 18cm * 8shots/plasma recharge = 3600CM damage, roughly 6 times that of the plasma cannon, 2 times if you consider that only 1/3 can reach any given arc reliably at any given time, and not accounting for double mounts (I havent had the game for a while so I cant exactly check). This should be devestating if they actually hit once in a while...
Personally I am of the persuasion that the Midway is heinously underarmed compared to the wartime carriers for antifighter work considering the lack of damage per shot landed and the lack of accuracy, although if it had decent lead compensation (or REALLY REALLY fast projectiles - has anyone experimented with this?) then it would be wonderful for antitorpedo work.

the plunkett all the way for sure! by the way, correct me if im wrong but didnt the plunkett carry fighters as well? i know nothing is said about it in the database here but i swear i have seen hangars on them or something else that hinted toward them carrying fighters because i can remember thinking it was weird that a cruiser would carry fighters..... has anyone else seen this or i have i gone completely out of my mind? :)

Lasers do 1.8 CM of damage, though, not 18 <G> (18 armor units). Still, this leaves out the missile turrets and the Midway's unsmulated, amorphous number of heavy ion cannons for ship to ship fighting (mentioned in the manual).

Am I the only one who wonders about the topic of this thread, given that the poll options are *not* just Confed ships?

*grin* Well, thats what I get for posting at 4AM local time... and I guess you could just consider the Ion cannons "uninstalled" or something...

Kind of...
But I think a better comparison would be with the science vessels (class-name escapes me at the moment). While the Plunket doesn't have the spinning (gravity?) section that the FS science vessel has, I still think the resemblence is there.

And with regards to your chart...
Corvettes were added in FS2, though. They filled the hole created when beam weapons were added. In FS1, guns were largely impotent except when massed in the quantities found on destroyers. The only weapons capable of large scale destruction were heavy warheads. Cruisers 'cruised' areas of space (can't keep a fighter out for very long, after all), and destroyers destroyed things. Thus, the terms fit.
When beam weapons were added, there was an obvious gap between the cruisers and the destroyers which the corvette filled. Cruisers have beam weapons, but not enough to make them effective.

Too bad there almost certainly won't be a Freespace 3.

Actually, Star Wars has a similarly 'odd' model. The cruisers and corvettes are in similar positions to where one would expect to find them in the real world (corvettes at the bottom of the feeding chain, and cruisers above them), but the monsters at the stop are the destroyers.

:p

Typo. Originally about Confee, changed it when I realized had 'nuff room for Bugs, too. 'Course it was too late to change the topic by then...
