F-36 Hornet - a Modo project.

I was playing Wing Commander for the first time in over a decade, yeah,
I know I'm dating myself here. I figured it'd be cool to try to do high
detail models of these ships, the way the movie SHOULD have done it.
I started with the ship I flew in the first few missions, the F-36 Hornet,
Confed's top light fighter at the time of the first game. I just finished
detailing and assigning materials to the laser cannons and missles.
And just finished the armour plating. I think that's enough for today.

Heh. Been visiting WC CIC for years, and reading the forums. When I
finally have something to post, I found out that I never did join up! DOH!

Would be cool to see some more surface features - more than just decorative panels, have some warning stickers, refuelling jacks... Having a definable purpose to each little detail, like on a real aircraft... I dunno, just my 2 cents.

The amount of detail & quality of lighting you already have is pretty ace...

True, but warning stickers and such need to wait until I UVmap and texture it.
And refueling jacks, what do they look like, and do WC fighters even use fuel,
or do they have reactors. Remember, I'm doing this with very little reference
material. Most of the pics I found show very little detail. If you know of more
detailed refs, please direct me to them. :)

PS: See the armour panel with the hole in the centre? I did that as a possible
location for a refueling port.

No real reference material, just reckon it's a good opportunity to put your own spin & interpretation on it - remembering that back in 1992 they were limited with what details they could get away with... I guess you could use the claw marks blueprints for ref (if you're not already):

Gives you an idea of where stuff is, but once again, the surface detail isn't all that... I'm just chucking around ideas to bring it into a more 2010 era design. But don't get me wrong, I'm just as much a fan of the original! It's your project!

Heh, I mention it now BEFORE you uv map & texture, to avoid the dreaded 're-work' - the bane of 3d modelling!

Somehow somebody tops off my afterburner fuel tank between missions. :)

We do see refueling in a number of cases, including in-flight refueling. This takes the form of a maneuvable boom in WC2 all the way to direct ship mating in Prophecy.

Ok, that's good to know. I haven't played WC2 for a LONG time, so I forgot about that
scene. I do like to do my own thing when modeling. There was a chap who did a lovely
hornet and dralthi here, and posted several renders from different angles. I'm using his
renders for references. Got his scimitar renders too, and his Broadsword renders. :)
Mostly for the color schemes. I've been using low poly models as size references.

The Morningstar has a texture detail for the launch sequence that shows a refueling port near the cockpit...at least it seems like one.
