Everybody Loves Ray Nodes (September 8, 2006)

Long Live the Confederation!
Veteran Origin artist Trey Hermann has a treat for everyone: three sketches from his days working on Wing Commander! The first two are from Prophecy: a pair of missiles and a Ray Node cluster! The third is from "an aborted Privateer spin-off" -- awesome stuff! Seeing concept artwork like this is always a great experience... the amount of detail artists put into things like this is stunning! Just look at all the little rivets and vents on those missiles... weapons that speed out of view in under a second in the actual game!

I wonder which religion was to use that cathedral.

While it's most likely that the picture may have been some sort of religious center, architecturaly the term can apply specifically to certain features.

For example a Cathedral-entry is a fairly common style of house here where the basement is sunk 4' or 5' in the ground and the upper floor is half a level above gound but the actual entry is ground level with stairs inside going either up or down (hence there is a high ceiling in the entry - most of the levels will have 8' ceilings whereas the entry thus has a 12' or 13' ceiling as it shares the upper floors ceiling)

That isn't to say the sketch isn't an actual cathedral though (it most likely is).

What I'd really like to see at some point is for the CIC to interview all the various ex-Originites that they have contact with, about all the aborted WC projects. It would be a lot of fun to have a brief description of all these projects, even the ones that didn't get past the concept phase.

Good points AD.

Thinking about it further it doesn't seem like the "cathedral" is set up to handle a large number of people, maybe on the ground floor?

I would certainly *love* to do an Origin 'living history' project, and have thought often about it -- but I really think that in order to do it right we'd need a significant amount of time and some kind of actual budget.

The aborted projects themselves that we know of tell a great story. The early artwork of Priv III is just fantastic.

Well, yeah, that would be needed to do it right - but for a start, just emailing the various Originites you have contact with, and getting them to email back telling a few sentences about the aborted projects they know of... that would already be something.
