End Run

I want thank both the author for writing this book, and they guys here for recommending it. It was a great story, and now I must say I am a little addicted to reading more. Suggestions, as well as other links to pdf's, or the website I can order these books from would be great.

Fleet Action is pretty much mandatory, considering it continues the story.
Did you play all games?

Yes sir... All the expansions as well. Though I missed out on the Privateer games.

Well, then you should look for the non-game novels (Fleet action, Action Stations and False Colors) first, in my opinion. Then you can read Heart of the Tiger and Price of Freedom. The CIC considers that the book version of the games is what actually happens, so it would be interesting not to miss them. But the really cool books, IMO, are these three i cited, lot's of new material and insights.

We don't, and nobody should, arbitrarily pick one official item over another when trying to figure out what "actually happened." Official items factor into the official backstory. While the games branch out quite a bit, the novels were all written with the "actual" plot branch that would be followed by future official products.

Thanks for the info. After Reading "End Run" I really want to read the other books now. They are pretty inexpensive used on Amazon.

Anyone who's a Wing Commander fan should read the novels. End Run is my favorite, but they're all really good.

I still remember dragging my WC novels to school with me, so I could read them during study hall. Who cares if people make fun of you, so long as you're enjoying yourself? :p

Also, don't forget Freedom Flight, which is actually set many years before End Run, during the Secret Missions 2 expansion pack for Wing Commander 1. A lot of people don't seem to like Freedom Flight, for some reason. But, personally, it's my second favorite novel after End Run.

Download DOSBox and find a copy of them on E-Bay. They're well worth your time. :)

I'd say the Forstchen novels are far superior, but then my memories of Freedom Flight are pretty old having read it when it first came out.

People like the Forstchen books because of the epic nature of them. FF is an amazing piece of WC fiction, that really feels like WC. ER and FA are great because we have these classic big battle stories, FF is great because we see characters we know a fair amount about living their lives. Hunter is one of my fav characters and rereading FF brings all those reasons back.

Cool Thanks, Visiting the news and forums sites bring up so many fond memories, I downloaded DosBox and started playing for the first time in years, reading End Run really brought me back to the times of yesteryear, though now my Joystick is acting, up so I have to find a replacement for that.

As for Privateer I think I still may have the disks for that. I have started that game probably 3 or 4 times, but then got distracted by other things... Anyway thanks guys.

Well, after I got a joystick back in the day, I started playing a lot better. I guess there is a reason why airplanes have them. Binary control interfaces aren't very good, you know :)

Oh, and the funny thing about Forstchen is that he loves to kill characters. he does that a lot in the WC books, a he does that with even more gusto in his Ice Profet books. Those are gruesome. But he can write fine Scifi/fantasy. :D

Eh, WC2 killed more characters than Forstchen has in all of his WC books combined :).

Oh, Forstchen didn't kill many game characters (one, like loaf mentioned), but he made up lots of new ones so they could die :)
His sadistic writer side is a lot stronger on the "Ice Prophet" books anyway. Those are gruesome.
