Double Helix

NoRemorse

Rear Admiral
I don't really know who they are (I've only seen their name in the WC1 manual)... is there someone here who can give me more information about it ??

Nobody knows much about them, except that they communicate through some sort of phermonal interaction, and anyone who has tried to communicate with them has gotten their brain fried. They are rather mysterious.

I've never heard of this! Anyone else know anything? LOAF?

News From Earth (Sol III)

(New York, North American States, Terran News Services) - On 2654.080, representatives of the Committee for Interaction with Alien Intelligences announced contact with a new alien race.

CIAI spokesman Iola Jonson made the following statement: "The CIAI regularly launches unmanned probes to uncharted jump-spheres; these probes contain our most sophisticated translation and interpretation equipment. Eight days ago, Probe Number H227 reappeared in a Terran jump-point carrying data and artifacts from a species we are currently referring to as the Double Helix.

From the information we have so far been able to interpret from H227's records, the Double Helix are a sentient race possessing space travel, and we are not ruling out the possibility they possess FTL drive technology. Physically, they appear to be carbon-based arthropods which communicate through scents and pheromones. Their name is derived from the double-helix shape of their spacecraft."

World Science Federation officials believe this to be the most significant contact with an alien species since the discovery of the Kilrathi, and hope that contact will remain friendly.

i heard that they were also mentioned in the prophesy manual but i don't have one so could somone confirm/deny this?

From ICIS page 18 (NonHuman Historical Analysis)

Likewise a superficial examination of Firekkan history shows contact with nothing similar, nor does the Double-Helix civilization (unsuprising, since the Double-Helix has very little consept of history in the human sense). Pre-space cultures like the Mopokes also offer no useful perspective, at least on initial analysis.

This obviously shows that Confed has much more contact with the Double Helix. We still don't really know much about them, though. They've been mentioned a couple of other places, I believe, but they don't really spring to mind.

TC

i also hear that the wording in the manual makes it seem that confed has a 2nd behemoth. Iceberg3k is tentitavly calling it the TCS Leviathian
but i think he is just being a fruit :)

In the Secret Ops fiction it talked about an instance when the first human to establish communication had his brain fried because he just didnt know that the Double Helix's way of saying hello would do that to him. He just wasnt prepared for that eventuallity and he died because of it.

I cant believe I've never heard of this!

And no one's written fan fiction about the Double Helix either?!

Someone probably have... there are hundreds of WC Fanfic stories. The Aces in particular have a huge number of stories.

here's some SO stuff...
from http://www.secretops.com/episodes/3_1_d_mail.html :

WITH THE KILRATHI WE HAD KNOWN MECHANICAL SYSTEMS THAT FUNCTIONED PRETTY MUCH LIKE OUR OWN, BUT THIS IS LIKE TRYING TO ANALYZE DOUBLE-HELIX INFO-STREAMS WITHOUT THE CORRECT HARMONIC FILTERS. THESE SHIPS ARE ORGANIC IN NATURE, HOW THEY FUNCION, OR WHAT THEIR STRUCTURAL MAKEUP IS IN ANY GIVEN STATE IS STILL UP FOR SPECULATION.

from http://www.secretops.com/episodes/3_2_d_mail.html :

THE DOUBLE-HELIX EXAMPLE IS A VALID ONE. WHEN DR. JUSTIN…WHAT WAS HIS NAME, KLIEN, KLING…ANYWAY…WHEN HE FIRST ATTEMPTED DIRECT COMMUNICATION THROUGH MODIFIED HOLO-LINK TRANSMISSIONS AND ENDED UP HAVING HIS CEREBELLUM FRIED BY A KEYED STREAM OF (LATER TERMED)FRENELI-COMPLEX HARMONIC SAMPLES, I'M SURE HE THOUGHT HE WAS PREPARED FOR ANYTHING. WHAT THE DOUBLE-HELIX ONLY INTENDED AS A WARM HELLO TURNED OUT TO BE A DIGITAL ICEPICK TO THE BRAIN.

I meant that the name might me infinging on a Star Trek race. (And there are those who say the Bugs are infringing on the Borg, or at least, what the Borg used to be)

Anyone who thinks the bugs are like the borg is on crack. Other than the hive mind (that we aren't even sure the bugs have, actually) they're nothing alike.

The Aces don't quite consider them a super-race that kicked the crap outta the Steltek, that's just Andrew Modeen.

Some of the Aces think that, since Aces fanfiction hasn't gotten there yet, it's not canonical (to the Aces, anyway). Some (mostly Andrew) think it is.

Technically, it takes place in the WCAces universe...I personally think of it as the "Wing Commander Movie" of Aces fanfiction. It fits, but most of the stuff in it doesn't ring quite true.

That, and Modeen's work, while so-so, contains a whole bunch of continuity errors ("But...Blair DIDN'T go to Telamon in the WC4 novel, so he didn't get the Gen-Select nanites that he has in 2792, and yet Modeen cites Blair's relationship with Sosa, which IS in the novel...what's he using? The game or the novel?...AGGGHH!!!"), is enough to make a few Aces' heads spin, including mine.

However, a lot of the Aces fanfiction is fairly good, and most of it is pretty decent. Check out Holding the Line and Maintaining the Vigilance.

EDIT: And yes, Holding the Line has a chapter that indicates the Nephilim have a hive-mind...but HtL is FANFICTION...and there's no evidence against them having a hive-mind, but there's none for it (besides the rare Bug death cry, "The Mother Creature shall avenge me!"), so...hey, believe what you want.

Blair did land on Telemon. The novel and the game are the same, when you're following the main path. Him landing just isn't described in the novel.

And the fact that they have gigantic super-ships known for wrecking havok. :)

Okay, I accept your statement. I was thinking more of the futility of defending against the entire Bug fleet (roughly as successful as defense against the Borg).

Why don't we move this to the Nephilem thread, before this goes Horribly Off Topic(tm)? :)
