CZ Admin Stuff (or: The Way Life Should Be)

By the way (I'm hoping that I can talk about admin stuff, at least in this thread ;)) I feel that the action taken against Wedge was rather harsh. I mean, he did have a valid point. The "monkeys in a tube" has little or nothing to do with WC. I mean, I don't personally mind such things (Me love monkeys ^_^), but knocking someone back to cadet - am I the only one who feels that rank is a big part of respectability (especially among new members) here at the CIC? Knowing that someone has been posting here a long time makes me more willing to give them an ear. While there are times where such a move may be warrented, I do not feel this is one of those times. Perhaps it is time, as Death said, to relinquish our ranks. And you can quote me on that.

I understand that it would probably be better to send this directly to LOAF, but, for one reason or another, I feel more comfortable posting it here, directly, at the Chat Zone.

Resetting post counts is the least of the responses. While Wedge was being a bit rude, it wasn't sufficient for banning.

Post counts aren't accurate measurements of anything abouta poster besides how loquacious they are. Contrary to what Comrade Lenin would have you believe, quantity doesn't necessarily have a quality all its own.

Perhaps it is time, as Death said, to relinquish our ranks. And you can quote me on that.

The only thing posted by me in the past few days that even remotely says anything even passingly similar to 'relinquish our ranks' was the following, posted here:

If the "rank whoring" continues, ranks may well go to "scrotum-licking pussmonkey" for everyone who's not an admin or moderator, regardless of the number of posts a person makes.

Please do not put words in my mouth.

Nonetheless, for most users at least, the number of posts is a good indicator of how long they've been here, and most new users do in fact seem to respect people with a higher rank. And as for Wedge, all he did was ask a question. Which, last I checked, is not a rude thing to do.

Telling LOAF to "Stop it" is a real bad idea. You have no right to tell anyone what they can or can't do. That is for the Moderators and Administrators to do. Wedge certainly should have known better.

My understanding was that it's only temporary. Too, I made a bad choice of words my post, and there was misunderstanding.

And I actually did not direct the "Stop it" at LOAF, but again, that was probably another bad choice of wording. Should have made myself clearer.

I took exception to the idea that someone would 'expect' I do news updates in a certain way, especially given the recent difficulties I've had doing news updates at all...

But I digress, I'm talking to Wedge in *private*, and the rest of you can go find other car wrecks to gasp at.

After reading of all this, it appears that the majority of complaints are people whining about their rank. Wow, does rank on an internet chat zone really mean that much to someone? I can't believe that. It's just a chat zone people! If you don't like it, then you don't have to be here.

That's my two cents.

As Quarto said the rank is usefull to know how long a *pilot* is here posting. but this is all.
of course you can´t get some discount from EA store in base of your rank or free downloads of WC things around the world..
But if we can get some positive things from the last days incidents it will be OK.

Actually...

Ranks don't indicate anything. Consider, if you will...

gryphon posted many one-liners, sometimes one atop another since he apparenlty disliked the Edit/Del button. By your logic, his post count indicated someone who'd been here far longer than he.

I have a post count of 358 as of this post, making me a Captain, but I've been posting since before the CIC existed; at WCHS, then on the UBB here, and now this vBoard. I'm ancient by CZ standards(Even though I'm a young'n compared to some of the staff guys,) but you outrank me.

All it tells people is that you're either talkative or not.

Hell, All I said was that Frosty wasn't doing anything like a fan project, and LOAF thought I was talking to him and here I am today

I have been here since summer of '99. I just tend to read posts and learn rather than actually post. I was out of the game environment for about 5 years, so I had to catch back up. So I agree that rank does not nessecarily indicate seniority. I also never post one liners, or short comments.

My point is that like Wedge I did something trivial and made a statement of fact/a question that is not truely offencive to the staff. With my bit, it was a true statement of fact as to what I know now and what I knew then, something that I was legitimately and freely allowed to say inresponce to a flame and to a very rude and uncalled for post, yet I am the one who got banned then had all trace of existance removed (ie post count removed), I was stating that this was because of either unclear writing or unclear understanding of what I said, not because of any true offence

With all due respect, SIR, why don't you have your own rank, then? Maybe it's time to rethink the rank system.

I'm pretty sure that KV once said "Ranks are for entertainment only", or something like that.

I understand and fully respect that. But when I first saw Frosty (as a Lt.), I always assumed he was just an arrogant newbie (no offense Frosty...this was at the beginning) and tended to think of him as such. Now that I know more about him, I have a great deal more respect.

Which leads to my point. While KV and the other admins may deal with rank as a bit of a joke, I usually deal with it as an accurate measure of a person's longetivity here...and, to an extent, their intelligence. :) That was what I meant by having most of us give up rank...to make everybody equal (well, equal to each other, at least...note that I'm leaving out admins and such :)).

Heh...

Now come on, we both know I'm at least capable of posting more than one line at a time -and I do, with regularity ;)
