Crappy gamer needs help

Hi, lately i've been trying to get into Wing Commander: Privateer, but my problem is that the mouse is inverted, is there any way to change this?

I know alot of people prefer that, but it gets me all confused, heh.

I tend to dissagree, the mouse gives a much quicker response than the keyboard making things a lot simpler.

But if you really want to call yourself a Wing Commander nut, use a joystick.

I broke the stick of my last joystick while playing Duke Nukem 3D...
After that i didnt really want to buy a new poor quality piece of shit.

People who play FPS with a stick deserve to suffer, ehehehehe
Nothing spells FRAGG like mouse and WASD. A regular mouse + WASD player will kick the ass of a elite keyboard only or joystick/gamepad player

Anyway, the mouse-playability of each WC varies. I think it is easier to use a keyboard on Privs case. But other games are better with the mouse, especially Priv2.

why the faq use a joystick with a FPS???

My brother kept telling me everythig was so much easier with a joystick, so i did it.
Too bad my poor jugdement killed my joystick

IMHO it hugely depends on the stick in question. I always played the OLD FPS (Doom, Duke 3D,...) with a joystick (Gravis Phoenix) and kicked much more ass then with any other method. Using a good stick should give you an advantage because of the HOTAS character, that is you should be faster when switching weapons and such. I still occastionally play some games with mouse and _THROTTLE_(!)

I've never been able to get my head around the "joystick for FPS" thing.
I mean, I don't know how I'd survive without mouse-look. You know, the walking along a room whilst looking around like I was some RPG wielding tourist on a sight-seeing tour.
Then again, that might be why I'm a bit crap at games.

As for Wing Commander - its a different story.
I have to use the keyboard. Besides, with a keyboard, everything is a button away surely?
Mouse control is impossible for me, and I've never played with a stick.

a mouse and trhottle might be nice. but nothing spells circle-strafing and fast, organic movemente like mouse + wasd. Go on a tournament, check if ANYONE plays with anything other than this venerable combo.

Also, nothing beats fligh, mech and space sims with joystickj.

As I said all depends on the stick in question. The Phoenix was excellent for exactly that circle strafing by being essentially 2 joysticks. You just moved around with the left hand one. Most excellent in Descent for example.
I'd also challenge the view that a mouse is faster to aim then a stick. Maybe a bit more precise, but much depends on training. We are simply more adapted to the mouse because we use it for daily work. I use to use a joystick for DRAWING(!) on my first computer.

but karl, each device has its pros and cons, not one is good in everything task. and descent was no regular fps... it was a lot more complex to operate. a "normal" fps is still better on the mouse. it's not just training, else there would be mice in real life airplane cockpits :)

I never used a mouse for any WC games.

When I first got into WC, I had one of those extremely crappy cheap-o-sticks they packaged with PCs back in the days, needless to say, it lasted about oh, 2 weeks before I snapped it off the base (hey sometimes you think if you keep trying you can get that last bit of turn out of the old girl).

My dad, taking pity on me and knowing how much WC get me out of his hair (I was only 9 when it orginally came out) he went on to buy me a slightly better stick which lasted me about a year. They I found about Thrustmaster. I saw one at a computer store and quickly was hooked.

I soon got not only the F-16 FCLS, TQS and RCS for the PC, but also got the FCS, TCS (i think that's what the F-4 throttle was called? anyone?) and RCS for the macintosh.

The FCLS gave me many years of joy until I finally had used it so much that it did not even sit straight up on its base (it was a little back and to the left). So I eventually got the F-22 stick, which lasted until my dad's house was struck by lighting 2 years ago.

And that's the story of how Dundradal got his sticks....

I don't argue that a hotas is better for flight sims. I argue that a hotas might be better for a FPS if enough training is put into place.
Besides the argument that something is used in professional application isn't necessarily a prove that it is superior. People often use what they are used to. Our keyboard layout is the result of a mechanical problem with typewriters, not ergonomics for example, but it stayed that way even on the PC...

The only FPS (if you can call it that) I used joysticks for were EarthSiege 2 and StarSiege, as it made it easier to control the rotating top section of the Herc, otherwise though I like the mouse to point and shoot.
