Did you ever wonder why in Privateer how Confed seaches you for contraband? I would just think that with the war going on and them being so close to Kilrathi space that they would leave the drug war up to the local militia. And I was also wondering if there is supposed to be like one set of laws for all Confed space or does each system have its own set of laws.
 
The fact that they're there, and so are you, is probably reason enough to do the scans. It takes no time, is perfectly legal, and helps suppress piracy and smuggling, so why not?

Also, remember that the pirates are attacking Confed shpping. This means that they and those that aid them are therefore interfereing with the war effort. That most assuredly IS Confed's business.
 
I can see why they still do the searches. Just cos they are busy trying to beat up some bad dudes doesnt mean that they have to leave the scum of society to rule the roost. I would say that to not provide such a service would be a deriliction of their first and foremost duty, to the law abiding citizens of the confederation.

I would expect a federal/state system similar to the present-day USA, with federal (confederate) laws that apply to all Confederation-controlled space, and planetary/system laws that apply on the local level.
 
I hear the government has a fighter that can run on one drop of Brilliance, but they're covering it up! It's a conspiracy, man!
