confederation class

two simple questions.

the class is designated as dreadnought, but its pretty much referred to as a carrier and even has the appropiate abbreviation (cvs) in the game. why is that?

my second question is that the concordia in wc2 is referred to as cvs-65 in cutscenes inside the ship (on the walls of next to the doors before entering a room in story cutscenes), but on the launch scence, the number on the end of the runway is 55. which is it?

It's classified as a dreadnaught because of its Phase Transit Cannon (presumably the 'S' portion of the designation refers to this fact.)

It's 65 throughout the game:

The Confederation class is basically the amalgamation of a battle ship and a carrier so you can call it a carrier or a dreadnaught but the dreadnaught is the real classification of the ship as stated.

The name "Dreadnaught" originally comes from the largest battleships of World War 1, named after the HMS Dreadnaught. So basically dreadnaught just means a huge heavily armed battleship.

As the others said . . . the Confederation-class is like a hybrid of a battleship and a heavy carrier. The official designation is dreadnought.

(What's very interesting is that in the WC1/2 official strategy guide, it was called a "Confederation-class carrier")

More interestingly, it was a "Confederation-class super cruiser" in the Joan's Update posted to Compuserv back in 1991.

But in Joan's Fighting SpaceCraft 2664.128 Update included in the Wing Commander II Vengeance of the Kilrathi™ Deluxe Edition Play Manual they call the Concordia simply a Confederation class ship, and they don't mention whether it's a Dreadnaught or a Carrier....

The odd part is that it's listed as a carrier in later docs, including the Kilrathi Saga manual.

Check the 'weapons' section of that same manual, under the listing for Phase Transit Cannon.

The specific fighter complement comes from the Kilrathi Saga manual. But what are you talking about?

hybrid...nuff said

The Concordia is a dreadnought with a reinforced fighter wing, or so it seems, given that most normal carriers have between 96-104 carriers, and she was based on a Concordia-class frame, at least as far as layout goes.

I'm not sure what the issue here is, though - every dreadnought we've ever seen in Wing Commander has carried fighters.

In other words, like the Sivar and the Vorgath?

Your average carrier isn't going to have fire power to have a slug fest with an enemy cruiser whereas a dreadnaught could possibly do this and still be an asset as a carrier vessel but I agree there really isnt an issue here
