CIC Birthday - #Wingnut absentees

Hello all.

I tried going onto #Wingnut at university yesterday, same problem as before - cannot connect. I assume the firewall or whatever prevents me from getting through. So that means I can't make it to the CIC Birthday celebration (I have classes from 9 am on Mondays anyway).

Anyway, I recall last year there was something absentees could sign up to, for the sake of prize-giving and what-not. Is there any chance that's happening again this year?

Thanks.

I think we actually skipped last year, but did it the prior year. We'll look into doing it this year. Making it a crius thread you have to sign is a good idea.

Sorry to push this, but I couldn't help but notice the news update.

I know it'll only be a tiny minority who can't make it, but I hate the thought of missing out on so much. :(

What we've done in the past was to make people who couldn't attend eligible for an alternate prize.. so if we repeated last year then you still might not be able to get all the stuff we have available. Have you thought about going to a copy center or somewhere with internet access for an hour or two? I know at least one or two people who plan to do that.

What about those who are going to try to attend, but might not be able to because of work?

I am looking forward to it next week, however, it appears that someone in their infinite wisdom said I have to go travelling next week as well (they told me this last week). I'll try to get on from the hotel (and bill it to work :) ) but access is spotty at best...

BTW, I didn't mean to give the impression that that was all I was after. I still wanted to be part of the fun, especially since I never had a chance before.

Copy centre?

Internet cafés are out of the question, but I just had a thought that perhaps the library computers might be able to connect (it would be safe to assume that the Computing Department's computer labs are more strict on security than others). I'll try to have a go there when I can.

Yeah, I know.

We have millions of Kinkos copy centers in the US that you can connect to the internet at. And yeah, lots of library computers would be able to run the java client at least.

Well, I've never even heard of Kinkos before, except in reference to getting to #Wingnut a few weeks back...

And I was thinking about the university library. I hope my inability to connect is only local to the ICS department.

Kinkos is a big North American photocopying/printing chain than also has a bunch of different types of workstations available for various different purposes, including desktop publishing and internet usage.
