Capship Components

;) There were huge battles in the novels...

Do you remember the big one in False Colors when those two Confederation cruisers (TCS Juneau + another) attack the huge Kilrathi carrier Karga?

I didn't mean that there weren't huge capship battles. What else would Fleet Action imply?

And the only reason I know of the False Colours battle was cos I read the prologue here. But that didn't feel like a fleet action to me, even if there was a dreadnought.

I know not everyone likes SW, but two dozen X-Wings and Uglies plus several hundred freighters trying to overwhelm a Super Star Destroyer with proton torps felt intense to me.

I just meant that the way it was written, everything being personal and that (much like WC) that particular battle had more feeling than many others, including Vukar Tag. There were way too many capships in that for it to be personal. (I hear something like this happens in Starlancer too).

Similarly, Kevin J Anderson wrote of multi capship battles in Darksabre, using dozens of Imperial Star Destroyers and hundreds of Victory Star Destroyers, but because there were too many, it didn't feel very intense to me.

An ugly is a fighter composed of separate designs. In that case there were X-Balls - TIE fighter cockpit with X wings on a rotating collar. The worst combination was a TYE-Wing (AKA Die-Wing). Slow engines and no shields.

Thats why we use mission editors to make our own giant capship battles!! :) FUN!!!:)

oooohhhhhh, the fireworks...... pretty.....

Uhhhh, only if you've got lots of mem. I played Primarch's SO missions. Too many capships sometimes, in Rebellion I kept being thrown out to Windows when there were too many fighters. No error message either.

That would be because the engine for the game you are playing anly supports so many objects. XvT could ony support 29 objects. I don't know how many prophecy does, but its more than that. The B5 game was rumored to support several thousand though. And freespace 2 supports more than I care to count.

Well if that's the case, then everyone else who has played the missions would get the problem too. I had to cut out a lot of the special effects to play it without it exiting all the time. When the game exits at the end of a mission, several times, that gets really annoying.

Let this not be construed as the start of one of those debates... I recall, once upon a time, playing a mission in X-Wing, where you've gotta take out the shield generators on a fuel-less STD, so that the Y-Wings can destroy it. 'Twas a hell of a mission, that. Lost all me wingmates, and 18 Y-Wings to boot. Though the ending was really anti-climatic - when an STD explodes, it uses the very same explosion graphics as everything else. In this case, however, the explosion must be scaled up to STD size, and so it ends up horribly pixellated.

The Old X-Wing or the X-Wing Aliance?
I can take out a Star Destoyer single handed in a X-Wing in XW:A.
Now Tie Fighter was a real chalange, no shields in most of the missions, but it still does not beats WC in fun.

Taking out a Star Destroyer with a Y or B-Wing in XW was pretty easy -- all you had to do was torpedo the towers and then disable it with your ion cannon.

I always thought those frigates were tougher than Star Destroyers, though -- at least with the Star Destroyers there was a shortcut to taking down the shields.

I already posted it in another thread but I think a combination of disabling and destroying Cap ships would be nice. In one mission you have to disable the Capship by destroying its components (First the shield generators then bridge, engine, launcher and weapons) and in other missions you simply have to destroy the capship by firing torpedoes at the hull (after having destroyed the shield generators).
This is applied to Starlancer, you cannot make torpedo runs yourself though.
Or do it like in X-Wing/TIE Fighter: Blowing ship components makes it easier to destroy the Capship but is not necessary.
And for the Cap Ship battles in Starlancer: They are not that gripping as, although they fire at each other with huge guns, they cause no damage to each other. And when they attack each other with torpedoes the outcoming is mostly pre-determined (your ship wins). I think there is only one cap ship battle where both ships fire torpedoes and the outcome is not fixed.

Dragon: The old XW. I haven't actually played XW: Alliance. And ironically, the only screenshots I've seen of it contained WC ships :).

Yeah, taking out an STD with a Y-Wing or B-Wing is easy, but only when you're flying the Y-Wing or B-Wing :(. The wingman AI in XW is not the best ever. In the particular mission I'm talking about, you're stuck in an X-Wing. You've got just barely enough torps to nuke the towers. Once you're down to lasers, it seems that pulling back a bit to fight the TIE fighters is a wiser choice.

(As for Frigates, I hate to even approach the bloody things)

I have the X-Wing with the X-Wing vs TIE Fighter engine (it came in a collection, I like a lot of TIE Fighter), and I play a few mission, its a nighmare, in XW:A its a lot easy to destroy a star destoyer, just go for the shields generators and find one of the many blind spots of the turrets.
The last missions of XW:A are very well done, similar to the movie itself.

I love playing XWA in the simulator and taking a squads of craft (different types for more fun, like a squad of X-Wings, or a squad of Cloakshapes, etc..) ans taking on a Super Star Destroyer. That's tough. Usually I don't put any enemy fighters, just for the fact that it's hard enough to get past the turrets let alone dodge fighters.

I'd love to actually feel threatened by a cap ship in WC. Kilrathi carriers in WC3 were the easiest things EVER to destroy. Just fly in the hanger, and blow it to hell from inside.

You wanna feel threatened by a capship in WC? Go up against a WC3/WCP Kilrathi Corvette. You'll feel threatened, and then you'll feel nothing ;).

The Freespace 2 engine supports up to 256 craft.
Capship battles are easily possible, but large scale ones are not a good idea unless you have lot's of memory. I am in charge of the Mod converting the Wing Commander ships to Freespace 2 i'm going to start some serious capship conversions when I get some models.

Corvettes didn't worry me, all you had to do was destroy that white/yellow gun (what was it? particle? neutron?) and then you're home free.

I'd love to see a B5 fighter game. No offence to the good people of WC, but I thought the best looking craft were from B5 (Starfuries looked horrid though) or Star Trek. As B5 has fighters, and lots of them, as well as a lot of older races, I believe it would be the best 'universe' to stage a game in. Asthetically anyway.

If the engine could support thousands of craft, whats needed, a supercomputer?

The Kat Korvette (note the K..hehe..)wasn't hard at all. I'd keep a few missles ready, just in case one came around, and just sit back and watch it die. No problem at all. I usually have a crap load of missles, because I almost never use them on fighters. And if i'm in my gold 'ol Longbow, I have plenty anyway.

Far be it from me to comment on a horribly cliche'd .sig -- but aren't at least two of those quotes wrong (G)?
