Bengal Retrofit

Bengal (Overhauled)

Alright, I held off for a while but as I am nearing completion, I wanted to post this here and get some feedback. This is my updated version of the Bengal with a serious weapon overhaul.

In the early 2460s, Confed Command realized that their Bengal class carriers were becoming more and more obsolete as the Kilrathi developed more effective anti-capship fighters and heavy torpedoes. Most were of the school of mind to scrap the venerable old design and proceed full force into the next generation of carriers. Despite these officer's insistence, some of the older members of command decided to refit a limited number of Bengals with updated weaponry and armor and hopefully extend the vessel's operating lifetime by another 5 years. The result of the refit was much more impressive then expected. The addition of flak turrets along the sides of the Bengal's long runway helped deter Kilrathi fighters from direct assaults. The beefed up neutron cannon turrets provided some serious auxilary firepower that was effective against both Kilrathi fighters and heavier capital craft. Most important to the Bengal's firepower upgrade was the massive AMG turret stationed in front of the bridge (overhanging the runway decking). This expensive option proved invaluable in numerous engagements.

Despite the extensive refit, the Bengal was still marked for extinction as it's power plant had severe limitations and other aspects of the ship had to be curtailed to enable the refitted weaponry. Additionally there were serious limitations to the amount of effective armor that could be mounted on the Bengal, hampering its ability to take part in sustained combat. Still the designers of the refit took the valuable lessons learned from the refitted Bengal and managed to implement them in later generations of carriers.

Haha, I'm a fanboy now I suppose...

This Monster looks more like a 1 Ship BATTLEFLEET
Maybe the Wing Commander-Version of a Imperial Star Destroyer.

Would’ve put the fear of God into the Kilrathi

I think I'm just falling in love.

It's technically well done, but I find it very ugly. Too much detail, too many square boxes. I like the clean and sleek TC better...

Not to mention that this whole fiction you wrote is kinda illogical. If the powerplant is too old, then it won't be enough to power the new weaponry and to move the now heavier ship. I'm sure they try to use ALL the available power when they design a ship...

And 5 years is too short a period to justify this probably very expensive overhaul.

It looks very formidable! It is sort of a mixture between the Battlestar Galactica, an Imperial Star Destroyer, and the Tiger's Claw in a very bad mood. It's different, but I kind of like it. I wouldn't want to be on the business end of that thing.

possibly...I just wanted to find a way to explain all the turrets ;)

Ehehe, sure, no problem. I got that, I just wanted to point that we can work something else out. Considering we're out of canon anyway, it can be said that this ship is some kind of Bengal MK2, maybe the the last ones produced were like that or something.

The quality of the model is very high, but I don't like it too much. It's too overdetailed. The bow and middle part look good except those gun rows at the sides of the landing bay. But the backpart is completely off. Not that additional detail is bad, but the stuff there seems to serve no other purpose than to make the ship look detailed. I'd either remove all that stuff from the wings and make them completely flat or at least make them more subtle in appearence.

My complements! I love the detail and the exceptional design elements. The command tower looks awesome! I really like the hue and contrast. Excellent use of attitude as well as your use of the original elements! Great job!

In my opinion this Tiger Claw is a better version since it looks very clean, is not pixelated and is not a drab dark green. :o

i love your design- i wish all WC capships were geared toward that sort of hitting power, instead of the usual handful of wussy laser turrets placed sporadically along the hull (which is stupid when you consider a Broadsword's energy weapon loadout (3 mass drivers and 3 double neutron turrets) is more then 1/2 as much energy weapon load out as some relatively large capships (a Broadsword, while a bomber, is STILL nowhere near the size of a non-transport capship) That looks like a WC capship to be feared! Keep up the good work!

That's pretty far-sighted, deciding that they're obsolete 159 years before the first ship enters service... :)

Haha...I knew I misplaced a digit...that's what happens you start watching Startrek. 2660s

well...as i said, that is fucking beautiful man. blowin me away with that exponential gettin better stuff!

heh heh, you know nothing of greeblin then buddy. seeing as how when a professional modeler does his detail work, he thinks of function after form and makin it look bad ass.

Nope. When you detail something you'll have to follow the basic geometry of whatever you're detailing, not just adding random things until you have enough polies to call it high res. Just look at the front and middle part, the detailing is pretty good there; Idon't like those turret rows on the side, but that's a personal thing. But the details are rather subtle and blend in without destroying the main shape. But the wings shape is overwhelmed by the things sticking out like warts there, it's hard to even make out their general shape at a quick glance. I'd loose those six...things sitting on the wings and move the other ribs and detail closer to the wings surface, and those intake things on the wings smaller and less of them, if they are laucn tubes, half of the fighters would crash into the carrier when starting.
If you don't believe me on the high detail part, check out about every sci-fi show in existance; prime example are Star Destroyer and Galactica. They're pretty basic smooth and streamlined shapes, and their surfece details are small and subtle, from the distance you'd make out only the basic shape.
