What events make the different factions like you? I would have thought that doing missions for the confed would make them like you (or at least hate you less) but it only appears that killing people that factions hate makes them like you. Is the true?

I failed the first Oxford mission and don't have a save game from before I started the pirate missions. Reading other threads here maybe I should buy an autotracker ;) When I go back to the library I'm told to forget it. Is there any way I can make them give me a second chance? As a side...
