Frank Talk About XNA Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

Here at wcnews.com we're always interested in finding out what former Wing Commander veterans have been up to since their time at Origin. Game Informer recently posted an article about the inner workings of Microsoft's XNA studio. You might have heard of XNA as the system by which - along with the new X-Box dashboard update - allows users to create and upload their own games over X-Box Live for other users to play.

Anyway, they flew to Microsoft in Washington state and visited Frank Savage who is a development manager for the XNA toolset. You can read about their visit and experience trying to create a simple game with the XNA studio here.

Here's a previous clip (43 meg wmv) of Frank talking about his work at Origin that you might be interested in. It's part of a much longer video of him speaking about the same Microsoft job and centers on his work with the XNA project. You can stream or download the entire video here.

Wing Commander fans have already been hard at work putting XNA through it's paces. NinjaLA even has one creation available already on the community games marketplace here. It will be interesting to see what kind of fan content will be created for the service in the future.

Sticks and Stones Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

Award-winning artist NinjaLA has put together two nice, even concept sketches. They're different takes on Kilrathi fighters - the first is based on the early Privateer Online artwork while the second is a stylized version of the Wing Commander movie's KF-100 Dralthi.

Kilrathi Character Model In Work Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA is working on a posable Kilrathi model. He's still working on the textures and skeleton to manipulate, but the basic model shape is together. It seems like a pretty accurate representation, though I have to admit looking at it definitely creeps me out.
I think the legs are pretty broken at the moment, and I'll detail up the head a bit more. Right now I think it's around 200k polys so it's not exactly a game model. It would be nice in video format though.

Cat-sicle Realism Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA, whose award-winning Wing Commander Arena artwork now hangs in one of the finest galleries in New York City, has completed another piece. This one shows a Kilrathi warrior, a Scimitar, a ground installation and ties them all together with some very elegant otherworldly nature. Wallpaper hounds will find that it is available in 1024x768, 1600x1200 and 2048x1536 versions.

Comic Concept Features Dralthi Render Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA has a couple more test renders for his Wing Commander comic. This time he's created a cel-shaded Dralthi and pitted it against a Hornet. You can see the progression from initial black and white concept to colorized space battle below. Ninja's currently on a business trip where he hopes to continue his drawing and make more progress on the project. Check out his Rapier here.
Here's the Dralthi I made for the webcomic. It's the version I'll probably end up using.

Computer Assistance For Comics Under Consideration Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA is still trying to work out some of the basics of a Wing Commander comic. One of the issues is whether or not to complement frames drawn by hand with occasional renders. This would speed up art creation for strips with exterior ship scenes. Additionally, while it'd be easy to color the rendered portions, he would probably need assistance coloring the inked parts to match. He's put together a couple of cel-shaded test renders to gauge the reaction and decide what direction to pursue.

A Different Kind of Modifier Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA has come up with another neat hand-drawn creation. He's spiced up one of his spare WC:CCG Vagabond cards with a pair of Hellcats and a Perry-style space station. He still needs to apply some black coating, but what he's got so far looks great. On the right is the original design from the Mag Force 7 card game.

Merry Christmas! Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

This year we have two very talented Wing Commander artists who are helping to spread their holiday cheer. On the left, Marc has rendered a nifty scene for everyone. He's put together a dressy New Constantinople style space station that's been visited by a Broadsword sleigh - complete with fancy rein-Ferrets! NinjaLA has also sketched out an awesome Christmas Mr. Kat. He got it just perfect. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all the Wingnuts out there!

Also check out a few of the neat holiday things that fans have put together in the past.

New Carrier Sneaks Online Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA is well known for his exciting Wing Commander sketches, but he's taking a crack at a rendering this time. The ship here is is an initial draft of the Kilrathi Hakaga carrier. It's based on the famous cover of Fleet Action. The design is not yet complete, but many of the ship's distinctive elements are already visible. He's off to a great start.
In eighty and forty days, four more carriers of the Hakaga class will be ready for their operational tests...

Concept Ship Makes Good Sketch Material Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

Like the rest of us, NinjaLA's in love with a bunch of the cool concept designs that Gaia developed for Wing Commander Arena. He's taken it one step further and drawn out a neat fan art picture based on one of the Kilrathi designs. It's certainly an interesting take on the concept craft. Weapons have been added and the engines are in full operation. The original's vintage rivet lines were all kept, but slightly organic elements were also added to the hull as well. Ninja's is on the left and Gaia's is on the right.

This isn't Ninja's first Arena-themed piece of art. If you missed it earlier, he won our summer Arena contest with this gorgeous piece.

Kilrathi Character Sharply Sketched Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

Here's another neat sketch from NinjaLA. The Kilrathi below incorporates more detail than some of his previous feline drawings, and he's included an ornate sword and elaborate armor to embellish the pose this time. Ninja's done a good job of creating a sitting character that also appears ready to pounce. The overall direction was inspired by some of the earlier Kilrathi in the Wing Commander series, but next time Ninja hopes to incorporate later influences such as the WC Movie.

There comes a time in every man's life where he has to sit back.. assess his life and draw a giant man-kitty.

Old Fighters Or New? Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA has created another neat sketch. He's mocked up five designs that are supposed to be old fighters that have been mentioned in official sources - but never seen. Since he used 'modern' game ships as an inspiration, some of these spaceframes may have ended up looking a little too much like their successors. Even still, each ship is an interesting caricature piece at the very least. Can you tell which fighter each is based on? You can help provide feedback at Crius.net. NinjaLA recently won the CIC's Xbox 360 contest by artistically recreating a capship battle from Wing Commander Arena.

Unclassified Sketches: Letter To Mrs. Chen Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA has had another neat idea for a Wing Commander sketch. It closely follows the Confederation Handbook letter from Angel to Bossman's family. The text was done by hand and is not a font. Frame one features the physical document, and the second image shows her recollection of the actual event being described. I like the comic Rapiers quite a bit. You can help provide feedback at Crius.net.

Mellow Out With A Kilrathi Scout Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA sent along this neat preview of a new scene he's been working on. It's still a work in progress, but it's pretty nifty as-is already. On the left is his first cut at the image, and a more refined update is on the right. The color and style add a lot to the piece, and the artsy Kilrathi looks really sharp. I like seeing how things like this develop too. NinjaLA imagines that the warrior pictured there is some sort of advance recon unit scouting out an attack on a Confed communications base. It's already pretty pleasant to look at, so I'm anxious to see how it shapes up when all is complete. Check out more of NinjaLA's art at ackthpppt.com.

Our Own Tooner Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA has begun work in earnest on a very impressive project: a Wing Commander comic! The art is very impressive -- it looks as though it were straight out of the original Claw Marks manual. So far he's published seven full pages -- and more are expected soon.

Score One For The Empire Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA has just finished inking up a couple more Kilrathi sketches. The first drawing features a classic Kilrathi male that includes a variety of common physical features. It doesn't exactly look like a Kilrathi from any particular Wing Commander product, but it would probably fit in anywhere in the series. Ninja's second image shows the original Dralthi emerging victorious in a dogfight with a Scimitar.
Ek'rah skabak erg Thrak'Kilrah maks Rag'nith!

New Comic Cover Leads The Way Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA has been practicing his Wing Commander sketches quite a bit lately, and now he's ready to explore a larger project. The image below is the cover for a comic idea that's going around lately. Both original ink and colorized versions are available to reveal a bit about the artistic process. Believe it or not, NinjaLA actually came up with this idea and drew it all out without having ever seen the Kilrathi Saga box before. Very impressive!
Partly nostalgia for my favorite game franchise, and partly due to excitement caused by the new availability of Privateer and Wing Commander 1, I decided it was high time that there was a Wing Commander comic as well. It is my hope that it will aid in convincing EA that there is a very healthy and vibrant community and fanbase still around, patiently waiting for a new Wing Commander title. This is a teaser that will probably be the cover of the first issue. It features three of the characters from Major Striker's comic idea from a few years ago: 2nd Leutenant Thomas Halcyon on the left, Captain Sarah Molynieux in the middle and 1st Lieutenant Jonathan "Shadow" Craft, as well as a very important Kilrathi yet to be disclosed.

NinjaLA Gets Ahead Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

NinjaLA was inspired by Powell's art from yesterday, so he got out his USB tablet and sketched another Kilrathi. He managed to put this together in just an hour or so, which is pretty impressive to me. You can check out NinjaLA's previous Kilrathi here and here, or check out his website for more general images.

Chris Roberts Is Keeping Busy Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

For those who haven't been keeping a close eye on Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, AD came across the production notes for the recently released Lucky Number Slevin. They include an updated version of the biography posted to his Ascendant Pictures production company website. The document has various quotes about his involvement with with Slevin project and boasts about his success with the Wing Commander series. You can grab the small pdf here. Mr. Roberts is also a producer for half a dozen other projects due out over the next couple years. Expiration Date, Who's Your Caddy?, Outlander, Black Water Transit, Grounded and Seasons of Dust are all in the queue. Note that the fourth paragraph is incorrect. Digital Anvil was closed prior to publication of this biography.
Chris Roberts founded Ascendant Pictures in spring 2002 and in just a short time, established himself and the company as a force in the world of independent film production and finance. In 2004, Roberts earned an Executive Producer credit on THE PUNISHER and produced THE BIG WHITE and LORD OF WAR.

In 2005, Roberts served as Executive Producer on THE JACKET and the upcoming Robert Towne film, ASK THE DUST. The end of 2005 finds him prepping for two films aiming for a spring 2006 start: Neil Jordan’s historical drama, BORGIA starring Colin Farrell and Scarlett Johansson, and the effects laden sci-fi Viking project, OUTLANDER. Roberts will also serve as Executive Producer on BLACK WATER TRANSIT.

Prior to founding Ascendant, Roberts was Chairman and CEO of Digital Anvil (DA), the game development and digital effects company he founded in 1996 with funding from Microsoft and Advanced Micro Devices. Roberts guided DA’s growth to annual revenues of $14 million, prior to the release of many of its games in development. His innovations changed the gaming industry. His games were the first to perfect the use of 35mm film as narrative in interactive game titles, and DA became the first interactive entertainment company to produce a game title, WING COMMANDER, into a $25 million feature film, directed and produced by Roberts. The film starred Freddie Prinze Jr., Saffron Burrows and Matthew Lillard.

DA and the video game titles it created won numerous gaming awards and the company became a digital effects powerhouse, creating all of the digital effects for the WING COMMANDER movie and contributing to the digital effects for several other films, including SPY KIDS. In December of 2000, Roberts sold DA to Microsoft. DA remains a successful subsidiary of Microsoft and content provider for the XBOX.

In 1987, Roberts joined Origin Systems, Inc. (OSI), which was later acquired as a wholly owned subsidiary by Electronic Arts (EA) in 1992 for $30 million. Roberts was instrumental in OSI’s growth from a company with $4 million in annual revenues to a company with annual revenues of $50 million. In 1990, Roberts developed WING COMMANDER, which set a new standard in PC games and evolved into a franchise series of game titles, all developed and produced by Roberts. With its cinematic quality, clearly developed storylines and well-known actors, the WING COMMANDER series created a whole new genre within the gaming industry known as the "interactive movie."

By 1995, the WING COMMANDER series had generated well over $110 million in revenues, and from 1990 to 1995, the series accounted for more than 60% of OSI’s revenue. In addition to selling more than 3 million units worldwide by 1995, the series has also won a record setting number of gaming awards. To date, WING COMMANDER has generated over $400 million in global retail revenue.

A gaming wunderkind, Roberts sold his first computer game at the age of 14, and by the age of 20, Roberts had developed three #1 hits in his native U.K.: MATCH DAY, WIZ ADORE and STRYKER RUN.
