In 2685, the Confederation Military Command deemed it neccesary to produce a new type of light carrier to supplement the Midway and Vesuvius class carriers already in service during any major conflict and provide a cheap and efficent way to patrol the borders of Confed space without tying up the heavy carriers on patrol routes.
To save cost, they didn't contract out the design to other shipbuilders such as Trojan IV and Sirius, they instead designed the vessel themselves to be built in the Confederation Naval Shipyards orbiting Earth. Bringing together pilots, engineers and line officers, including Admiral Jason Bondravesky from the Landriech and Admiral Kevin Tolwyn, who had served on escort carriers during the Kilrathi war in the mid 60's.
After 11 months of deliberation, the design was finalized in its current condition in early 2687. The vessels, now dubbed the New York class, were an excellent balance of speed, firepower, and armor which could serve well in a main battlegroup or as a raiding vessel. Their 65 fighters could hold down a system for larger vessels to secure and can destroy a raiding target with enough leeway to be safe. The speed of the carriers also made them effective for patrol routes.
After 3 years of work, the first six hulls, including New York had been completed and are awaiting their launch. Currently all sit above Earth, with all major systems installed. New York will be the first to launch, and wil proceed to the McAuliffe fleet base in Vega Sector to be fully outfitted and then she will join the 7th Fleet.
