Wing Commander Ranks and Uniforms

I beg to differ old chap. A post captain was one that was on the captain's list but did not have a ship to command. The most senior of these were to be promoted to commodore whereby they could command groups of ships.

The only other officer to command a ship was a commander who as stated could only command a 6th rate ship. But other than that what you say seems to make some sense.

However, a mate was like a warrant officer. He held a warrant rather than a commission. I can agree however that a sub-lt was a midshipman who had been granted a commission but had yet to make Lt grade
