Wing Commander Mentioned by AVGN

Seventh Part of the Seal
In rant he did about 8 months ago, James, the Angry Video Game Nerd mentioned WC in his... rather vulgar review of the 3do system... not sure if anyone previously posted this.

That guy is still around? I totally forgot he existed.

I'm not going to listen to some kid yell at his youtube camera, but I will go ahead and point out that anyone who knows Wing Commander III for the 3DO /and/ says the system is crummy is a god damn liar who isn't worth being taken apart to provide organs to aging war criminals. There ought to be a law.

To be fair, the guy was more ranting about the crappiness of the game "Pumbers don't wear ties" which I have played and thrown out my window. His main issue with the 3DO was how expensive it was back then. I would consider what he said about WC3 was more honorable mention then anything.

Wasn't that the Mario Brothers softcore porn parody? Who needs to tell anyone that that's a bad game ever? It's not even a good /concept/.

The 3DO was too expensive at launch, but it was also one of the first game systems ever to actually take a step back and realize that. 3DOs were $160 by the time anyone actually bought them.

I actually watched this through, and despite demanding the last ten minutes of my life back, I think his point about $700 for a Goldstar was fair and he did give WC3 a positive nod. That 'game' would have been vastly better if it was Mario porn, what it is, is not even a game, it's a retarded slideshow.

$700 for a Goldstar, eh? See, he's reading you somebody's wikipedia and he has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. The Goldstar units shipped at $349 and included a $50 mail-in rebate from day one. (The Goldstar was actually announced at $399, but had its price cut in response to Sony's announcement before it reached stores.)

The "famous" $700 3DO is the Panasonic FZ-1, which shipped months before not just the other companies' 3DOs but also before the Sega Saturn/Sony Playstation/Nintendo N64. That seems like an insane price today, but it was set to match similar 'high end' video game hardware at the time--the Neo Geo home unit and its ilk--because there was nothing else that compared to it.

When Sony announced the Playstation at $299, Goldstar put out the forementioned $350 3DO model... and Panasonic replaced the FZ-1 with the $199 FZ-10 (the Goldstar was $199 by December '95, too.) The point of the old story this kid doesn't actually know isn't that the 3DO died because it was too expensive... it's that in retrospect there was a huge missed opportunity to beat the other consoles to market at a lower price instead of just tying them. But you never had to choose between a $700 3DO and a $300 Playstation.

(You can certainly argue that one thing that's unique about the 3DO concept is that it reacted very quickly to price changes... because you had multiple competing 3DO consoles. The problem was that there was no unified sales strategy in the other direction.)

I also want the Mario Brothers softcore porn game to be a real thing now.

Some of his videos are way off. Personally I don't know how he got so popular... unless poop and fart jokes are still considered funny.
His critique of the original TMNT game was way off and he couldn't figure out how to land the plane in topgun (Which if you look at the bottom of the screen, the freaken altitude and speed is right there!)
I could go on all day about some of the inconsistencies, but I did think his review of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker on Genisis was hysterical.

Ehh... even if you somehow did find something funny in this guy's act, you're not suppose to admit that to other people.

When you see these types of shows, you can't inherently take them as full-on serious criticisms of the product, as they're omitting some accuracies for the sake of entertainment. What he's playing at is the nostalgic factor behind them, if the game was infamously difficult, expect to hear about how it was just that. If landing the plane in Top Gun was hard, then expect that to be brought up. If TMNT made weird level design decisions that pissed us off as kids, you better believe that'll be highlighted in the video at some point.

Huh. Well, if I wanted to watch someone lying to everyone in order be popular... I'd watch the Presidential debates!

I'm here all week, folks!

Are there people who consider this stuff "entertainment"? If so, I demand they be shot in the town square immediately.

Seriously though, if you're going to omit stuff for the sake of entertaining the most anal-retentive people in the world, you're not doing your job right.

It's not entertainment, it's a serious review. Heed his advice and do not ever buy a Goldstar 3DO or some kind of interactive porno game no one remembers.

(Do buy an FZ-10, though, because Wing Commander III 3DO is sweeter than a million candy suns.)

The wierd part I find about all of this is your insistence that he's doing a serious review. The bit he talks about Wing Commander... It's in a positive light yet you all know no dignity and STILL question his status as a "legitimate entertainer" when his site, which you clearly didn't check, has a FAQ that should clear up everything for you people who insist he's trying to be a serious reviewer:

Remember this is for comedy. Sure my gripes with the games stem from truth, but they are exaggerated. The whole point is to play bad. If you want to see somebody play good, go watch a speed run. If you take my reviews seriously, you are missing the whole point. Think for yourself. I may actually like some of the games I’m complaining about. I only focus on the negative. When I think back to the Castlevania 2 video, it was just a quick little video I made one night when I was bored, just for a little joke, and there’s real “Angry Nerd’s” getting mad about it. It’s funny how people usually see videos on YouTube and take them at face value. The same people probably believe that I go around in real life, wearing a white pressed shirt, stuffed with pens in the pocket, and saying “fuck” all the time and talking about buffallos taking diarrhea dumps.

Better check with Hyundai, there's a recall out on your sarcasm meter.

I'm not being sarcastic, you're just being stupid. Might wanna get that shark-jumper of yours looked at.

"Some of them are pretty impressive for it's time, like Wing Commander III. It features big name actors, like Malcolm McDowell, and Mark Hamill." A quote from 3:29 in to the video. And it's praise.

The entire review is focused on an entirely different game, by an entirely different company. Why are you trashing James Rolfe?

Oh right, he mentioned Wing Commander, and he's a young guy so he automatically couldn't know what he was talking about. God, I've seen more convincing flawed arguments out of 4chan.
