Wing Commander: Call to Glory

My not so *secret* project anymore (current WIP main screen):

Call to Glory is a Wing Commander RPG being built in the tradition of old games like Final Fantasy III (VI for the Japanese), Chrono Trigger, and the Dragonquest series on the antique Super Nintendo.

It currently is being developed using the open-source RPG Toolkit.

The player assumes the roll of a Confed Marine in a Secret Ops mission gone wrong during the bloody Kilrathi offensive of WC3. As Confed is forced to pull back, the TCS Valhalla is pinned between a panic stricken colony and an invading Kilrathi force hell bent wiping you and the Valhalla out of the system for the glory of Sivar.

It'll be ready the day furballs die.

Have questions? Ideas? Or suggestions?

Let me know.

HAHAHA I like the quit option

my suggestion for you at the moment is that it better have a good soundtrack, and a playable Kilrathi character...

I'm defenetly looking forward to this.

Well, to let you know, character creation is planned to let players choose their race from Terrans, Firekkans, and Kilrathi and respective genders.

And I'll just add creating sprites is a lot more difficult than I've expected. When working high-res, details were no problem. Pixel art is a bit different hard getting used to.

Music makes the mood. You can't have a WC RPG without the trademark Wing Commander music. Current plans are using a mixture of tracks from WC 2-4.

Thanks for the offer Gamer, as I do plan on adding voices - well - cause plain text just doesn't have any kick that voices do.

Anyhow, here's my venture into the first set of sprites:

The Terrans -

Not as bad as I thought. My intention is to create a series of 'universal' sprites that I can deck out in different sets of tones, garb, arms, and weapons. The Kilrathi will probably end up with more variation, but that's where I start digging through books of felines.

The system this takes place in will be Astoria, so some more info if any aside from the map could be of use to me.

What a great idea! Very good writing skills on the intro:

Great setting and colorful writing!

Interesting sprites, hopefully your characters will have clothes on? ;)

It seems like there would be many opportunities for new characters to join in- colonists wanting to fight, a renegade Kilrathi, a downed fighter pilot, lone survivor(s) of a crashed ship... As far as enemies it seems like you could have Kilrathi of different skills and rankings, Confed traders/defectors, rebel forces, Kilrathi weaponry like tanks, fighters, etc.. seems like there would be a lot of possibilities.. I can imagine cities like the final fantasy towns with a governor/mayor instead of a King, etc.. Instead of dungeons, you could have capships and Kilrathi held territories. Very cool!

Current plans call for 10 PCs

Frankly 15+ player characters would partly drive me nuts and prefer to have fewer characters so more time can be spent on fleshing them out. Reminds me of the quality v.s. quantity in games, but since this is Wing Commander, quality is not an option or suggestion - it's mandatory.

And yes, there will be Kilrathi for the player to recruit (aside from being Kilrathi if they want too!).

I am a little bit interested in what you have announced, but I have a few things to point out.

1. Answer the call - that means new game?
2. Return to duty - That probably means return to game
3. Quit ... - Quite obvious.

The menu is missing some things that you might want to include in the future.

1. Options - Change graphic detail, resolution, sound volume, controls, internet connection, etc.
2. Save/Load game - Nobody likes to lose what they have done in the game
3. Multiplayer - Most RPGs can go online for multiplayer action.

I believe that the Return to Duty is load game.

How the heck could this be multiplayer?

Well, I have an idea how it could be, but I don't think he would want to code that.

New mmenu mockup...

New main menu layout and a quick apology to Fleet Tactics:

I've done some changes to the menu and am in process of creating a mockup for the M-47 Laser rifle (correct me if I'm wrong). Psych did me a quick favor and reminded that the Escort carrier seen in the earlier WIP pic is Fleet Tactics property (my own model is based off the FT pictures, so I do feel a bit stupid for mixing up the two in my archives).

I need to organize my 500+ WC related imagery into proper places so this doesn't happen again. :(

Since this is a game about Confed Marines, a ship or fighter wouldn't work to convey the message even though flyboys will play an important part.

@Kevin -

Answer the Call - New game
Return to Duty - Load Game

Working on inserting game options and planning on coding a basic WC Universe encyclopedia for reference too.

Multiplayer?

I have no plans for multiplayer.

That's crazy, Psych sits around waiting to harass people who dare use the misinformation from his horrible years-out-of-date website? He doesn't "own" anything about Wing Commander. What a jerk.

This is the last straw -- we put up with a lot of crap from him for the sake of old times, but no more. It's more symbolic than anything else, but Chris has agreed that he should be permanently banned.

Some new news.

I'm migrating to a new RPG engine that offers more flexibility than the RPG Toolkit. The new engine is called Sphere, albeit similar in function, uses Javascript and appears more complex to use, but the trade for versatility is something I'm willing to take.

I continue to pixelate and game design is shaping up. Currently tackling this singlehandedly, but my dad actually offered to lend his Java skills to the project, which will make my job somewhat easier.

More plans and positions should be available when I'm done with my Art History test this friday, freeing up some much needed time to beating out a proper game design document.

I guess it shouldn't hurt to mention the prologue setting:

What better trial of fire then charging into a Kat super carrier to bring them a warm thermonuclear Christmas present?

The rest should fall into place.

I like the way you think, and with what you just said why do you call yourself chicken? how about chicken hawk or el pollo loco? Keep up the good work with the project! cant wait to see how it turns out!

Hehe, now that is a way to start a game. :)
