Wing Commander 2- Hard as Nails

I'm sure youve all played WC2, the second mission where you have to escort the Broadswords to the fralthra. Well, I've deemed it "the Kobayashi Maru of wing commander" because I honestly can't win, either the fighters wont die and end up killing the broadswords, or I kill the fighters and the fralthra kills them instead. Could someone give me a few pointers on how to do this mission (not go after the ones shooting the bombers, i know that one) but something, anything, to stop me from ripping my hair out and crashing into the fralthra to cheer me up, it really is blagging suede.
 
Learn how to take down a Sartha completely in one head-on pass. You'll pretty much need that much efficiency to even up the odds enough so that both Broadswords have a decent go at the Fraltha - then it becomes a cakewalk.
 
If I remember correctly the difficulty is scaled. Try letting yourself lose a few easy missions then play that one. It should be much easier.
 
not related to the question being asked here but i think "the Kobayashi Maru of wing commander" would deffinately be the T-Bomb run at the end of wc3. that is the only mission in wingcommander games ( that i have played ) that i have yet to finish ( without cheats )

Not to say that the level isn't tough but I can think of a couple of WC missions that I sweated a heck of a lot harder than that.

Are you cloaking at appropriate times? Unless you're fighting Ekapshis nonstop on the surface, there's nothing too difficult about that one. It's certainly no "Kabayashi Maru." It's the final mission and it's not meant to be unbeatable. The Proxima/Sol missions are the only ones in the game that fall into that category.

That's not how it works. If you fail key missions, you could fall into the losing variant of mission, which may be easier and may be harder.
 
The WC2 AI gradually dumbs itself down (but not noticable to me) within a game session if the game judges your skill to be inadequate. Or you can use the debug keys for the DOS version that instantaneously change the AI version mid-flight (forgotten what they were though)

As for tough missions, try the Arrow scramble/endurance marathon after you get yourself drunk ;) (Drunk as in the In-game decision, or, you can also try to augment that effect with real alcohol or a seven day nonstop stocktake)

I think it's more simple than that. The AI skill ratchets up slightly as enemies are destroyed at a nav point to simulate the desperation of the pilots.
 
It's the AI, Ive remembered one thing I forgot to mention, I got every kill in the two missions before that, I bet the AI's been set to "Really deadly mode".
Sorry if I've made everyone think about their hardest missions, ones that are surely harder than mine, besides theres a thread for that.

I'll try taking sarthas in one pass and refrain from using the joystick, afterall it keeps on freezing for a second and makes me fly in hoops for about five minutes until I can compensate.

After all the fighters are reasonably thined, and the bombers are near the fralthra, go near the fralthra and draw the turret fire. Atleast thats how I did it.

Hmm okay. I'll have to watch for that sometime.

I've tried just flying straight at a navpoint with enemies and do nothing. After dying a few times and retrying the mission, I've noticed that the AI seemed to have dropped itself below the default level.
