Why not compare maniac to someone like jazz, age and combat experience were more even.
Maniac comes through because he always has luck, and comes through because he does things so stupid so nobody sees them coming(when you encounter paladin in WC2, he talks about maniac persuading two fraltha to fly into each other because of creative manouvres). As for the character, he could outmanouvre damon karnes in an inferiour craft, where blair could not. In the novell, i do not have those, but read parts, did not blair and maniac had to team to take seether out? Maniac may be an unstable character, but in the end he is the one who comes through and lives, always has, against impossible odds. If you were to pit him against an ace like iceman, he would probably fly into and bounce off an asteroid smashing backward into iceman's ship and crippling it or something, and be free to fly home.
