What would you like to see in a non-standard Wing Commander game?

With everyone talking about how Arena is taking Wing Commander to strange new places, it reminded me of a non-standard Wing Commander game that I have wanted to see for maybe twelve years or so... (GASP) a Wing Commander first person shooter, one that does for the first person shooter genre what Wing Commander did for space combat games.

A squad to command, real characters, a real storyline, cinematic gameplay.

Just imagine a shooter where your success or failure as a Confed marine has a bearing on the success or failure of a campaign.

After a mission, you can hang out in Marine country or whatever, get a drink and hang out with your fellow marines. Check the killboard, run a simulation of the trenches of Rapleetah or the rescue of Dr Severin. Receive your briefing and board a Marine LC bound for a Kilrathi raider or a Nephilim dreadnought.

I would love to see Confed Marine operations in action, and it would be awesome to experience a genre-bending game that raises the cinematic standard for first person shooters.

God it feels great to have hope for official Wing Commander games again!!

I had notions of a game like this too way back when. All the wingman comms would be there still too. "whats your status?" "Attack (charge?)" "form on my wing!" (take cover/ form up). "Help me out!" "Attack my target."

And taunting would be an interesting twist for the FPS genre. And missions could directly tie in to the flight sim theme. (Paint your target missions, Clearing/ deffending a landing zone/ evacuation. Deffending your carrier from a boarding party durring a massive fleet battle. )

Yeah, it would be neat in one of those situations where you and your enemy are both taking cover. Instead of rolling a grenade or something at them, you could yell at them!

Probably my favorite thing about Star Trek: Elite Force and Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault was the intelligent teamwork element. I liked how the hazard team could hold their own without you, but relied on you to lead them through the map in Elite Force, and I liked how your squad responded to simple advance, covering fire and retreat-type orders in Pacific Assault.

I also really enjoyed the time you could spend walking around Voyager, talking to people as they walked by in the corridors, as they ate in the mess or relaxed in the lounge.

I'd just love to see another game like that that takes this sort of interaction to a new level, preferably in the Wing Commander universe. Of course, it'll probably never happen, but it would be a neat way to introduce today's fps-hungry gamers to the type of gameplay Wing Commander has to offer. Hey, a guy can dream! :D

It would also be fun if you could play on the Kilrathi side as well - disembowelling those honorless hairless monkeys with your bare claws for the glory of the Emperor.

A great climatic ending for a Wing Commander FPS would be to deploy nukes inside Kirlathi supercarriers on the Battle of Terra. The victory screen would be a big flash of light, and there would be no sequel for the character.

I've always wanted to see a real time strategy game where you could control a Confed fleet. Something similar to Nexus.

I like the ideas mentioned above (Marine Shooter and RTS Strategy).

A shooter, if done properly, would be a lot of fun. I've wanted to see the Confed Marines in action for a long time now.

The RTS would be really something, especially if it's scale could vary. A career mode would be very nice, something akin to the old DOS Great Naval Battles series. In there, you worked your way up from command of a destroyer to a full task force with battleships and cruisers.

A WC version would start with command of a frigate or corvette and work up from there. It would be one hell of a game, that's for sure. Commanding the Concordia, or the Tiger's Claw, or another fleet carrier and her escorts would be a real trip. And, if a historical battles section could be added, things would only be better. The Battle for McAuliffe at the beginning of the war, Custer's Carnival, Vukar Tag, the Battle of Earth, etc.

All we can do is hope.

Although still under development, there's a preview release of a WC4 Homeworld 2 mod available here (114MB) that allows numerous RTS elements, i.e. gathering resources, constructing and commanding WC capital ships and fighters, etc.

Hey AD, is your HL2 Victory map still in the pipeline?

Cheers,

Bryn

I've tinkered with it some, but I've been trying to get my other stuff out of the way first. I might go back to it (though I have to redo alot of it) but I have to decide what's a priority. Should I let Queeg take over the movie thing and send along the notes so to speak and pick this up or try and get the WC4 movie finished up. It's a project that's been close to me for a while but for which I've been seeing less of a necessity of late. I know people are looking forward to it and I'd certainly hate to disapoint people. But I'm also balancing this all between Family life, work, and too much counterstrike. (and the Outlander thing has been sucking up oodles of time too). It's one of those things I should have finished before starting anything else...

No problem, AD.

I know I'm still looking forward to your WC4 movie, but I wouldn't want you to feel pressured to complete it, especially with various other demands. If Arena causes a surge of interest in WC when it's released, hopefully some HL2 modders will tackle a WC map/mod?

I think I agree with others on here that the "non-standard" WC game that I'd like to see most would be a first person shooter - assuming, of course, that it's done right, and that, like Half-Life 2, it has characters that you come to care about and a plot that pulls you in.

I'd very much like to see a more "standard" WC sequel first, though. I admit, there are problems that have to be overcome (no joysticks), but I honestly think that such a WC game, if done well, could be successful.

Arena isn't quite what I hoped for, and I'm not so sure it'll be my cup of tea. But, as I've said, I'm willing to give EA some leeway on it. AND, I take it as a good sign that anything is being done with WC at all.

I'm hoping that this in the end run won't damage Wing Commander. I'm excited that Wing Commander has returned but I'm worried about what a mediocre game could do to a series that hasn't had a new release in ten years and what newer fans will take from the Wing Commander series.

As popular as games like that DS surgeon game, and other tinkering games (Like American Chopper.) go, I wouldn't mind a game that let's you build/repair/modify, etc. the fighters and later on caps ships and the like.

It's an interesting concept, though I don't know how much market appeal that kind of game would have.

The Wing Commander universe has always been well suited to an FPS, infact I would say more so than the vast majority of universes in which FPSs these days are actually set.
We have seen marines acting as "ground pounders" recovering space stations, heck even alien super gates (the end to WCP would have just as well been done from FP, you play until Decker is pinned and then assume the role of Blair). And yes from the books there was the deploying of the Nukes, I found that book truly enjoyable and one of the most important elements was played out by marines.

The sheer variety is argument enough. Wing Commander fans would be happy to see an environment where the great storytelling was possible, in fact between half the missions marines would be on carriers with pilots so you could easily introduce characters to be in a space combat sequel.

I doubt EA will consider it, from the press releases its clear they are trying to cater to the old market through space combat but lets be fair, half the the reason us old timers are still kicking around is our wonderful memories of the diverse universe; in fact as we've never seen a WC FPS before I would be just as excited to hear news of a FPS as a Space Combat title.

Some work was done on "Wing Commander Mercenaries", which was Battlefield 1942 in WC... the project died, but it would have been a WC game with ground combat *and* space stuff.

Before that, there was talk about doing ground combat in the Wing Movie game (which stayed StarLancer) and also doing a straight up WC FPS back at Origin.

Command & Conquer: Renegade is a good example of a twist in a series. The game wasn't THAT good, but that's the kind of idea I'd like to see happen to Wing Commander.

Amazing that never came around - given the popularity of the Star Wars: Battlefront series (the second of which has space battles as well).

However, we'd probably hear people piss and moan about it not being a "real Wing Commander game" just like they refer to Battlefront 2 as a "bad reminder of how great TIE Fighter was" even though the game it's self is great.

Indeed, people are stupid. Also, on a side note, Star wars Battlefront 2 was a graet game. Although I always play the guys that wear white, no matter what era. Guess I roll like that >_>
