WCP Requirements

My brother just got a IBM Thinkpad labtop the other day and told me that I could buy a PC game to play on it.

What are the requirements for the original Wing Commader Prophecy.

Thanks,

i think it was a P166 with a 3d card and 32 megs of memory
a P200 with 32 megs of memory without a 3d card

Standard System
Pentium 166 MHz
Windows 95/Windows 98 and DirectX 6.0
32 MB RAM
2 MB PCI or AGP video card that supports 16-bit color
200 MB free hard drive space
DirectX 6.0-compatible sound card
Joystick

There have also been a suprising number of people who could run it with under that...

Well, the manual doesn't actually say that those are the minimal requirements, but the box probably does. It's a shame I left my box at home.

Not so surprising, actually: I'm surprised that folks aren't more aware of the fact that the sys req's listed for a lot of games/programs are "soft". I've run several games with a machine that, acc. to the spex, shouldn't have been able to run 'em...

Case in point: I bought and ran WC4 on my old 486 DX2-66, when the box said that it "needed" a Pentium, running at 100 Mhz, as minimum CPU spec.

Object lesson: take sys req's as a general guideline, and take it with a sizeable grain of salt...

There has been exceptions with me. I got System Shock 2 to run on a P1 chip (though very badly and needed two Monster 3d accelerator cards slaved to another Diamond display card) but had serious problems with getting WC4 to run on a 486/80.

I ran WC3 on a 386/40, yehaw, that was just rocking.

Scramble, all piltos to your ship IMMEDIATELY => 30 Minutes later => You can start colonel...

*hrhr*...

I have played WCP on P 166 with 16mb RAM without 3D card, and I`ve finished it without any problems on minimal details settings.

There's a bit of a difference between getting a game to run and getting a game to run without it being so slow that it tears away at your soul.

OK, then perhaps I shoulda added that it ran well on this system that it shouldn't've ran on at ALL...

Sure it ran a bit better once I got a more qualified system, but it was not at all "tearing away at my soul" on the lesser system.

And LeHah, I have been able to run SEVERAL games that shouldn't've been able to run, not just one or two. Unfortunately, since it was 4-5 years ago, I can't recall the names of the games/programs, except for WC4 (see how much of an impression WC makes?!...)

On a WCP related Topic I was looking at Game Controls at this here website and saw that it has Space for Fire guns does that mean the Spacebar or " _ " Key and Backspace is that the " Delete " Key?

Space generally refers to the Spacebar. An underscore would be represented by the underscore character.

I'd hate to play a game that used that key to fire your main guns, though.

No... It's the Backspace key... Yours might be represented by a leftward-facing arrow. It's usually near the Enter or Return key.

He may be rnning a Mac. Some Macs have no backspace key.

WCIV was a bit better optimized than WC3 -- so it actually ran better on a 486. Still, it's not something I'd want to do again...

I too was a veteran of the 10-20 minute wait for WC3 missions to load. God I was floored when a P100 would pop you right into a mission in WC4. Originally did Prophecy on that P100 with 16 ram and a 1 meg video card. And boy, it was great. Now I'm playing Sim City 4 with a 1.73 GHz chip and 512 ram, and it's pretty choppy. :) Looking forward to Generals next week with its 1.8 GHz recommended spec.
