WC2-era ship images

I didn't mean it in the sence that LOAF is a 3D artist, it's more like, LOAF has a reputation of having a vast amount of WC information (texts, facs, resarch and sometimes original renders)
Thought so...
After all I've read from LOAF in the past two years, there's no other conclusion than that he's a living WCpedia. ;)

and my full name is Marc Pageau. it's french and usualy doesn't translate very well in english-
Pas de problème, je connais français. :) But I know what you mean...
Thanks for the rest of the bunch - I'll certainly put those to good use! As soon as I've got the scaling done, I'll post some more pictures.

Update: I'm still not quite satisfied with the scaling, and the Ajax and Sheffield seem a bit out of place in direct comparison. But I wanted to let you know how the WC2 fleet looks on a hex grid:

WC2 fleet (1280x1024, 72 dpi, 1.5 MB)

Bad luck for the furballs, though - they're pretty much outnumbered and outgunned. ;)

Maybe I'll cut down the Gilgamesh and the Ralatha - they look rather massive compared to the cruisers. After that, I'll tweak those ship stats once again and go play-testing... I can't hardly wait! :D

@Marc: I just stumbled over your WC2-style Durango-class in another thread (dating back from March) and wondered if you still got that model. Since you didn't mention it anywhere in this thread, I'm fearing the worst... ;)

Fist off, I gotta say that last shot you posted was the most inspiring sight I've seen in long while... very nice, very nice indeed. You can tweek the sizes of the Bengal and the Gilgamesh and make them smaller... and you'll need to flip the image of the Light Carrier "Ranger" (its conning tower is on the wrong side), that's about all I've noticed right off the bat.

Fear not, the Durango-class is safe and sound ( I searched and found it last night after reading your post... backed up on an old zip drive of all things)

I'm trying to finish this one before the end of the week:

look familiar?

AND, if I fool around with the Fralthra model and dish out some new engines real fast I can make a WC2 style Shiraak Carrier- but again this ain't WC canon.

Well, thanks! Your models played no small part in it... ;)

I'm a bit confused right now as far as the conning towers are concernced... LOAF said something about mirrored ships in WC3/WC4, so I'm not sure if the tower on the light carrier is on the right side or not. (Hm, no pun intended. ;) )
I also decided to use your Ranger model for the Concordia-class instead. If you could remove the "40" on the Ranger's bow (or replace it with another number), I could still use it for both ship classes, though. (A smaller, scaled-down version for the "Ranger," and one for the Concordia-class.)

Wow! Definitely one of my favorite designs from the more recent *cough* WC titles - and it really doesn't look bad in green. :D
I'm wondering if it was the UBW who turned the Durango into an improvised carrier... Wasn't the Intrepid a Confed destroyer before?

You've inspired me to devote a little more time to modeling
Great! The Confed fleet - now with more bases! :p

I'm trying to finish this one before the end of the week:

You bet it does! Looking forward to see it finished! :)

AND, if I fool around with the Fralthra model and dish out some new engines real fast I can make a WC2 style Shiraak Carrier- but again this ain't WC canon.
Shiraak? Never heard of it, but anyway: The more variety in ship classes, the better. And the Kilrathi could need another capship in their fleet right now, I guess. Blowing up only Ralathas and Fralthras all the time could become boring on the long run... :D

P.S.: Check your private messages!

Just a note, all ship files (or at least the meshes and textures) come out mirrored...either because the game engine reverses them in game or the files are extracted out reversed. (I think WCP/SO has the same problem too, but I am not sure as most everything in that game is symmetrical (except for the Pelican).

K'Tithrak Mang looks great, as always! :)
At this point, I'm wondering how difficult it would be to get all those WC2-style models to work in Flight Commander... :D

Concerning the Shiraak: Well, never say never, I guess. Of course I know the Shiraak - I suddenly remembered while waking up yesterday. (Weird enough, I dreamed about flying a Sabre that night, too. )

Edit: I just noticed that the base's contours become pixelated when trying to use Photoshop's erazor tool. Probably because, this time, you used the JPG format instead of GIF. ;) Could you please re-render it and save it as a GIF image?

I can
I will
and I have:

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4166/kthrak04ox5.gif

and while I'm at it, here's a blank numered light carrier:
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/3311/ranger04lv3.gif
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/4348/ranger05st8.gif

And I won't have you running around passing off a light carrier for a fleet carrier, not if I have something to do with it.
Now I was saving this one to present to the CIC community later in the month in a 3D thread (around NewYears).... but I'm afraid you leave me no choice sir. :)

THIS is what a Fleet Carrier looks like:

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5283/fleetca02iq8.gif
you'll notice the differences are discreet but present none-the-less.

WOW!

Hey, just a thought... It'd make sense for Confed to make the Ranger and Fleet carriers have very similar proportions and paint schemes, right? That way, Kilrathi recon and intel would have to find some other way to tell them apart! :) Marc, bloody magic, sir! Tres Bon!

Amazing! I really don't know what to say - other than "thanks a lot," that is.
Aw, now it gnaws at my conscience that I unintentionally spoilt your premiere! If I ever am to sleep well again, you better come up with something equally impressive for the community in the last few remaining days of old 2006... (Just kidding!) ;)

Only one nit-pick about that fleet carrier: I think the textures on the outside of the hangar (those black plates with the "neon" lights on them) look a bit too...err..."modern." Doesn't go too well with the rest of the more comic-style textures IMHO. But maybe it's just me. ;)

Okay, since you posted your "Christmas present" early, so did I - you can find it here! Have fun... ;)

Btw, Marc... *cough* Private message! *cough* :p

Yeah, about those neon lights... those are supposed to be windows. I didn't think they would come out so bright on the renders... It's one of the rare features that makes it visualy different from the Ranger style.

I usually base myself on some ground details that I just won't change when I give the ships WC2 paint jobs and that was one of them.

Hey Marc, what does your collection (if even existing) of WC1 meshes look like?

I could use some to use as visual aids while drawing.

Thanks to whoever gave my project the "news treatment!" (LOAF?) I almost fell off my chair when I logged on to the CIC and saw it... Christmas is definitely early this year! :)

This really reminds me of the ole SNES games Super Conflict! and Metal Marines.

I really enjoyed those games, so that style of play + WC universe = !!!

Good luck in your endeavour, looking good so far!

great artwork
I really like the Ranger
I always did like the look of WC2 even if it had a touch of a cartoon look to it
I wish something had come of that GalCiv2 conversion. GalCiv2 is a perfect platform for WC1/2 style artwork

Hey! I've actually been toying with the idea of taking the old Wing Commander styles and 're-invisioning' them with an illustrative feel, and this kind of project is definitely something I wouldn't mind helping to snaz up. (I'm also a graphic designer by trade)

Here's a couple sci-fi related pieces from my conceptual portfolio:
