WC1 impressions

Finder of things, Doer of stuff
As I mentioned before I've been playing wc1 again along with the SM1 and SM2. When I first played the game.. was is ten... i dunno, years ago, I always thought there wasn't much story to it.. My impressions of the core game havn't changed much. The story line consists mostly of tacticts and suggestions for beating various fighters. But before, I had never paid much attention to it. But now, once I got into the secret missions.. Wow.
I'm impressed. I never had a chance to play the secret mission packs till now. I love the way SM2 leads into WC2.

You are partially right in WC1 Angel is the *technical advisor*,she speaks of the quantity of misssiles to destroy dralthis and other things, but there is also the story side and personal life of our heroes (like the daughter of Iceman and other things)

WC1 was a tactical game most of the time, I can't comment on the SMs cause I don't have KS though I'm trying to find it somewhere!!

Though WC1 does have personel details thrown in from time to time, as Ghost mentioned.

Well... WC1 did have a storyline... it wasn't as developed as the ones from WC3 or WC4 obviously, but it's there nonetheless!
That was one of the original purposes of Wing Commander: avoid being a combat space simulator where you're only told "Do this!", "Destroy that!" and then you would do it. Here there are characters behind it, they tell you the implications of each mission, they give you rewards, there's a debriefing (isn't it better to have someone tell you what went wrong in the mission you just flew that simply "GAME OVER -Press any key to continue?)...
You live the adventure!!

But I agree to some extent with AD, I also found that the Secret Missions got you more "into the story", they made you feel the Confederation needed you more than ever... :)

Or is that just the feeling you get because the missions are a lot harder? :D

To me, the parts I liked the best about WC1's story were the cutscenes when you leave a system, showing either a Confed or Kilrathi victory or defeat depending on how well you flew in that system. I just thought that was neat.

Personaly I think WC1 has a freespace 2 plot type in it depth with a little character development which was enough to flesh them out. However SM1 and SM2 got a lot better and personaly I think were a great lead on to the wc2 plot stlye. Overall it rocked.

Yeah I remember injoying SM1 and 2, there probley what got me to keep going onto the WC game series.

I loved WC1 from the beginning because for the first time there was a universe which actually reacted to my deeds. Especially the promotions and medals impressed me and of course the cutscenes.
But the Secret Missions were indeed more personal but I found also WC1 to be very interesting.

I remember my cousin and I playing wing commander 1 ages ago. We would eject every mission just so we could see the animation showing either a confed or kilrathi victory... mind you the ones we saw were the losing path. (Back then we kinda sucked at the game!)

Yeah... what felt really bad though, was when the Sivar priestesses were saved by the shields (!) of those Kilrathi bodyguards in Secret Missions 2 (losing path)...

Kilrathi sure had resistant shields... :)

It's been years

I finally got an old 486 up and running and reloaded WC1 again. There is something to that old saying "You can't go home again." I remember WC1 was the coolest game I ever put on a pc (this was in 1991) I loved it. Yet I have to admit I have gotten spoiled to good graphics such as in WCIV and WCP, as well as Freespace1 & 2. However my first impression of WC1 was of AWE! There I was on a carrier in deep space flying fighters of said carrier, nothing could be cooler than that.
