WC1 Deluxe CD - No Sound

NoMention

Rear Admiral
I installed the Wing Commander 1 Deluxe CD that includes both the Secret Missions and Secret Missions 2. I have the Sound Blaster AWE64 ISA card. Every other game seems to work fine with this card. I also turned off my CPU cache since the game was running way too fast. The only problem is that I am not hearing anything. I have gone through and selected all of the sound options - Sound Blaster, Ad Lib, Roland, etc and none actually produce any sound. I don't like that CD loader thing either. When I run the origin.bat file on the root of the CD and then select the game I want to play, it spits out an error about an incorrect DOS version. This I don't get since I am playing the game using a DOS boot disk. Maybe this is the problem? If I run the wc.exe from the subfolder (that origin.bat eventually shells out to), the game runs but I don't get sound.

Any help would be really appreciated!!

Could you post your autoexec.bat and your config.sys file? Perhaps some data there is mixed up. - Oh, and what OS are you (normally) on? - You could try DOSBox 0.61 if still nothing works.

I am using a boot disk to pure DOS but the computer also has Windows 98 on it too. When I run Wing Commander 2 Deluxe CD, I get sound effects, music and speech. I have 610K of free DOS memory so I don't think it is that. I think it has to do with that stupid origin.bat loader program that then shells out to wc.exe. As for why it detects that I have an incorrect version of DOS is beyond me. Is it possible that my version of DOS that I am booting into is too new?

I'll post my autoexec bat and config sys files tonight when I get home and have access to that computer.

As far as DosBox 61 goes, for some reason I must have something configured wrong because it doesn't work at all for me. When I launch it, it shows the "Joystick detected" message in that background window but the main window just sits there and never comes up to the C: prompt. I tried adjusting the cycles both higher and lower but even after letting the computer sit there for 30 minutes, it was still stuck. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it. Don't know what is the problem...

You know you have to mount a C drive, so that the C: prompt appears? If you don't do that, the only drive will be Z:
Just an example:
mount C C:\Spiele\Dosbox\Games
This mounts "C:\Spiele\Dosbox\Games" as the DOSBox C: drive.

And why are you using the origin.bat loader instead of WC.exe itself? (Have got the Combo Deluxe CD only, but don't use a loeder bat file, although it's present, I think.) And to check what is wrong or if there is something wrong at all with the origin.bat, justcheck what it is doing (Just like your autoexec.bat, I mean)

The problem with DosBox is that it doesn't ever get to the point where I get the Z: prompt. It just sort of sits there with a blank window, no text, nothing. I think that the app hangs. I know how to use DosBox since it works on my P4 computer. I really didn't want to use it as I would prefer to stay in native DOS. My WC2 Deluxe works fine after I turned off the CPU caching. I just don't know why the WC1 Deluxe doesn't work right. The game runs fine, just no sound or music. My setting for my AWE64 are Base 220, IRQ 5, DMA 1. This works on every other game, just not WC1 and I can't see anywhere to change it. All I can do is pick "Creative Sound Blaster". Does this assume a different configuration than what I have? Does WC1 assume to use Base 220, IRQ 7, DMA 1?

Sorry, didn't know it was THAT serious (with DOSBox :( ) - I thought you just didn't realize the Z: thingy, cause I've already read some other posts with such a simple prob (in the DOSBox Forum that was, I think). Anyway, I'm sorry, no real idea what is going wrong there :( - Especially cause your Base/IRQ/DMA aren't unusual (in older DOS Games's point of view I mean)

Here are my Autoexec.bat and config.sys settings:

[Autoexec.bat]
SET EXPAND=YES
SET PATH=C:\DOS
LOADHIGH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:mscd0001 /L:F
LOADHIGH C:\MOUSE\mouse.com
SET SOUND=C:\SB16
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0
SET CTCM=C:\CTCM
C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S
C:\SB16\AWEUTIL /S
C:\SB16\MIXERSET /P /Q
C:\CTCM\CTCU /S

[Config.sys]
DEVICE=C:\CTCM\CTCM.EXE
DEVICE=himem.sys /testmem:eek:ff /v
DEVICEHIGH=emm386.exe 16384 RAM D=48
DEVICEHIGH=oakcdrom.sys /D:mscd0001

The game loads up fine and will run. However, if I use the "origin.bat" file on the CD, the game will NOT launch properly. It gives me an "Incorrect DOS Version" error and then say that it can't run a redirect for WC.EXE. If I launch using WC.EXE, the game runs fine but there is not any sound. I don't understand how the CD version really works. Where does it save these configuration settings? I looking in my "Data Disk" folder and do not see any configuration file that I could make out. Is my install not doing something properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Normally teghre should be a config file in the Wing Commander Default Folder on hour HDD. No idea why you don not have any. I've already uploaded mine (the one for Crusader and the one for WC1) cause of a problem someone else had. You might want to try them out, but no idea if they work for you:

My CFG files are the same as yours. Unfortunately, I have not idea what they indicate since it must be some wacky format. I did find those on my computer. I guess I just don't really remember the CD version very much from a long time ago. When I first got the CD back in like 1991, I don't it accessing the A: drive. Nor do I remember it looking for files like append.exe, join.exe, etc. The WC2 CD works just fine for me. The installer is pretty different too. I guess I will just play around more with it. Does WC1 use CD-Audio? I don't know if I have the CD cable plugged directly into my sound card or not. I should probably check that as well. I just don't really get why WC1 would not work with my configuration but WC2 and every other game I have works just fine... Most strange.

Well, my WC1&WC2 CD version doesn't need the CD at all after install. But can't tell about your version, though. Maybe this helps: my WC1 is 7.57MB big and contains 91 files (with SM1 and SM2 installed). - So if yours is the same size/number of files, the CD shouldn't be needed anyway.

The WC1 CD version that I have shows 213 files in 9 directories for a total of 18,606,601 bytes, according to a dir /s command. How is mine different? It says on the cover of the disc "CD-Rom Deluxe Edition Plus The Secret Missions and The Secret Missions 2 Crusade". It has a little film like looking image strip on the cover as well with in game images. It also shows both an origin and a Software Toolworks logo on it. I haven't seen any versions online at ebay for a WC1 from Software Toolworks. Maybe this is the problem?? I can't figure out how to get the sound back.

So definitely different from mine. Could you somehow post a list of all files included? - Or at least the directories, cause all files is quite a lot. No idea if it really helps, but who knows ;)

OMG, you really did it :O - I hope you didn't write that manually. If yes, wow, respect ;)
I'll try to look through those stuff and will hopefully find something out that helps you. I guess I should be able to report back tomorrow or Tuesday.

EDIT: Ah, now I got how you did it :)

Here is the list of files I have installed in my Wing Dir on the HDD:

That's it. I installed the VGA version, so that's why you have got more files on the CD ;) The size difference should be cause I'm using the German version and you the English one. As far as I can tell you don't have got the SM2 missions on the CD, right? Would explain the missing files

No, I didn't do it all manually. I ran the following line from my C prompt:

dir /s >> C:\files.txt

This wrote out the entire contents of the CD to a text file. Then I just copied and pasted. I think that somehow this CD is not really that compatible with my system. First off, if I run Origin.bat, which the system tells me it must do, it errors out saying "Incorrect Dos version" and then jumps back to Dos. If I run the WC.exe, it runs the game but I do not get sound nor can I save game in the barracks. When I try, it says disc read error. When I run Origin.bat, it attempts to make a "data disc" on the hard drive but since I can launch the game (origin.bat opens up to a menu to pick whether to play WC1 or SM1 or SM2) I don't think it recogizes this data drive and probably why I do not get any sound. I guess I'll just have to play Kilrathi Saga instead. I prefer the DOS version over the windows version though... As I said before, I don't have these problems with the WC2 Deluxe CD. Only the WC1 Deluxe CD. I think because it was packaged by Software Toolworks, it might be somehow different from other ones. I can't think of any other ideas...

Ah, ok, another way to do so :) See my edited post - I just listed mine for better comparison ;)

EDIT: You might want to try to copy the files I listed manually to your HDD and launch WC.exe from the HDD drive instead of origin.bat - maybe that works with sound.

No, it contains the Secret Missions 1 and Secret Missions 2. As for copying it all to the hard drive, I tried that as well but the program somehow checks for a CD Drive or something because it says to insert the CD into the first CD drive in the chain. For a game made in 199x, it sure is a tough one to get working properly. Do you know anything about this "Incorrect Dos Message" error? I noticed that when I run the origin.bat file, it somehow shells out to either WC.exe or WC2.exe based on which menu option I pick. The funny thing is that it passes several parameters to executable. Things like the path to the data disk and path to the CD game files. Very strange indeed.

The other strange thing is that it only copies the minimum to the harddrive. It plays pretty much the entire game from the CD. I put up the list of files from the CD. I also selected the VGA option when "installing" and it looks like it is using it but it doesn't recognize the sound. I wish there was a way to play this whole thing from the hard drive. Every time you autopilot, it takes like 5 seconds to load the nav point from the CD. That's kind of aggrevating. I'll look to see if I still have another copy of this game since at one point I had the Ultima VI/WC Cd lying around here somewhere.

This is just a guess, but maybe another "install.dat" might help to allow you to play it from the HDD. - Cause our config-file is already the same. But what me really makes wondering, is that you have got some files missing (disk.004 and disk.005) but then again you've got some others I don't have: DISK.007 DISK.008 DISK.009 DISK.010
Other than that, only the crusade savegame file is missing on your CD. So might also be possible that those tiny files are the prob.
One question: Were you ever abel (since you bought the game) to play it with sound? (If you already mentioned it, sorry, forgot already some parts of the Thread :( )

Argh, I'm an idiot! :(
I don't have the German version, just the English version as well. Only diff is mine is a bit newer n(at least if I remember the date correctly. Will look it up when I'm bnack at home). - So that does NOT explain why my files have a diff size. They are just diff. cause you got another version. One thing that is def. diff. in your version is SM2 (just look at the mssing savegame-file, other disk-files and diff. size of briefing2.) Hmm. Guess it is best to really make a comparision and a list of all files which have different sizes. I'll do that when I'm home, not enough time now (currently at university). But on the other hand, no diea how it will help, execpt that I could send you the different files - if they are not too many, that is.

One more thing: I'm just getting into those sound setting commands and their effects in DOS, but you might try out whether you get sound with a different "T" setting - T6 is maybe too new for WC1 - just a guess, though. But guessing is the only thing at the moment that might help. I'll look up the exact names later.
