Waterloo

Well, as it seems that everyone and their cat is getting into the modeling business I thought I'd do a refresher myself. I decided to do the Waterloo. Here's what I've done so far:

Poly count currently stands at 2246. This particular model is intended to be the TCS Leningrad, the cruiser destroyed by Ralgha nar Hhallas's Ras Nik'rhra

hey now, very nice bob!

my only suggestion would be to soften up the forward section, as it's not that rigid, also the neck is wider at the part connecting with the main hull and tapers down into the nose also. but yeah though, awesome start :)

Thanks. Yeah, the nose section really is a bitch, I spent the longest time trying to build it out of booleans and Meshsmooths before giving up. I'm putting it aside to concentrate on the hull and particularly on details, which is one aspect where I've been lacking and which certain people have been bugging me about.

You can see the Anti-Matter turrets on the model below. There's currently six of them, two more than actually exist, as I try to balance the WCII schematic with the model and come up with a logical turret arrangement.

Also, Marc, if you're reading this, if you're interested I'd like to try to figure out the internal hangar arrangement of this thing.

Try starting the nose section with the spline contours, or just do it in NURBS altogether then polygonize it when it's done. Either way is easy after you have the outline for the main round part which all the others connect to.

if you start with an 8 sided cylinder and extrude a bit, you'll be able to get that shape real quick and easy with mesh smooth. not a lot of work at all. just build it in as low a res cage as you can, detail after you're sure you've got the desired look.

Mmkay, here's the revised nose section. I do believe it's the first waternose I've ever been completely comfortable with.

Box modeling, me and NURBS have a mutual hatred.

Here's a closeup. The two domes are booleaned together, but I daresay that it's not at all noticable.

sweet. nope, looks really good. box modeling is a great way of going about things. i tend to model everything by hand in the end. just more efficient. meshsmooth can also go a long way towards making complex shapes simple to acheive. really great job there bob :)

Let's hear it for the box modellers! :) Of which I am a proud member! Looking good, Bob, booleans can be a major pain to pull off and it looks like you've done a fine job here.

I think all the basics are there, and it a pretty good start-off point for you.
Should you wish to take it further, just say the word and I'll send you the model and all relevant texture files.

Amazing work, Marc ! That view from hagar-out is especially powerfull.

Someday it'd be nice to have some kind of complete Capship visual tour with diagrams etc. (à-la Star Trek books)...
