Two newbie questions

1. By accident, I once bumped into a merchant I had just rescued from pirates.
The pilot started screaming about me ruining her ship, and shooting at me.
I tried running, but after a while the whole system was full of hostiles, including
the merchant bases. I tried docking, I tried talking to them nicely - nothing.
My reputation with the merchants at the time was not stelar, but not too bad
either - something around 70. I did not want to start blowing them up, so I
reloaded.

So, what is the way to make them stop firing at you?

2. I have seen talk about 'storyline' missions on this forum. I do not think I have
encountered anything like this yet. Is this something that will come as I get better
reputation and equipment, or as I leave the system, or should I look into the
less reputable missions that are being offered in the bars? I have statyed away
from drug smuggling, for example.

Please, try to avoid spoilers :)

2. There is a man in a certain station's bar who will begin the plot for you. You'll be able to tell by how weird the request is.

In the original, any time you talked to a "fixer" you were taking on a storyline mission. It's slightly more difficult, therefore, to suss out the story in the new version, at least in my opinion. If you're stuck for something to do, talk to the bartender.

If you make someone mad, keep saying comm. option 3 to them until they cool off. That doesn't always work , and sometimes takes dozens of tries. You cannot talk nice to Retros.

Bartenders know where the action is.

Well you certainly have to push 3 several times to cool off enemy which's faction is -100 hostile... Practically it's impossible. Apparently enemy doesn't calm down until relationship with his faction reaches 0 (neutral) or some positive value (friendly) and that number goes up by 1 every time you chat nicely to the enemy - if you're lucky.
So it takes at least 50 times of tapping 3 to appease enemy who's faction is -50 hostile. Correct me if I'm wrong but so it seemed...

Thank you for the replies. I am still a bit unclear about the 'cooling off', though.
My reputation with the merchants was about 70, but once the pilot I bumped into
started complaining, all the merchants started attacking me, and the faction
reputation did not fall significantly, if at all. Do I have to talk everyone who is
attacking me into stopping, or will they all give up the chase at some point?

To me, it looked as if as long as one merchant is firing at me, all her friends are
willing to assist her.

if you critically damage a merchant her friends will come after you.
if you just get her mad they won't.

If confed scans you all confed ships in the area will help, but if you jump into another sector they won't pay attention (unless it's a plot thing)
if your faction relation is < 0 then you will be attacked by that faction
you can see relations in the shift-M map under info

Sounds like you got unlucky and bumper her with her shields down significantly enough that her armor was damaged.. They can shrug off a nudge or two, but when you start doing physical damage to the ship, they get a bit annoyed. In that case, run away, or sweet talk each and every one that is attacking you. And fly carefully :)

I had exactly the same problem (ran into a merchant ship after a jump, with afterburners on :D) and had to gun down some of them. An easy way to get out of this is to dock in the closest base and do as many merchant missions (defend , escort , ... cargo doesn't count) as possible until your reputation gets back to 100.

Now, you can check to see if the fixer is animated or not (this works most of the time)

I've seen the term "fixer" used quite a bit now and I must admit that I had no idea what it was. I still don't know for sure, but I'm guessing it's the people sitting at the tables in the bars? maybe?

What are "fixers" and why are they called that? ;-)

They are people in the bars - correct. Most of these people at the tables - these 'fixers' - offer various missions similar to the mission computer, although usually more intense, dangerous and rewarding! Some, however, offer missions of the campaign kind...

As to why they are called that, I have no idea :), but presumably something along the lines of 'I can fix you up with a rewarding mission, if you like...?'

It's the people who are sitting at the table in bars. They're called fixers because that's what they do to you if you fail their missions :)
