The TCS Austin

I dont know if we have a conjunctural class for the Austin already, but since it was supposed to be bigger than the Claw, could it be a Concordia class ship or would it be some as yet unknown class of carrier?

Gettysburg class (not to be confused with the Waterloo-class TCS Gettysburg). At least, I think that's the one. I believe it's mentioned in Freedom Flight.

Gettysburg class Cruiser -- presumably similar to the Concordia class supercruisers... a massive battleship of some sort.

Does anyone have a good picture of the Austin (assuming it was ever seen - I didn't play SM1\2 :D)?

Unfortunately, the ship is never seen properly. It does appear in SM2... for about two seconds. So, they put in an Exeter.

What role do squadrons aboard destroyers and cruisers serve? Do they fly patrols like carrier based fighters or are they striclty for cap ship defense?

probably both. they would be usefull for extending the sensors ranges. make sure nobody sneaks up on ya

But if the destroyer or cruiser is escorting a carrier, wouldnt the carrier's fighters take care of the extended patrols?

probably yeah. the carrier would have more specialised fighters. in a pinch the cruisers fighters would help out the carrier with its own fighters.

I wonder if the pilots aboard cruisers and destroyers were at the bottom of their classes at the academy or if there isnt any difference, that its just where they were posted.

Now now, cruisers and destroyers aren't limited to escort roles, so their fighters aren't limited to assisting carriers in an emergency. Anyway, the fighters' role is probably defence and scouting for enemy ships. And their pilots are undoubtedly as good as carrier-based pilots. It may be, though, that they are trained by the Navy rather than the Space Force.

Heh, i just realized the best example of a cruiser/destroyer fighter squadron at work. SO. Add to everything we did in the game carrier escort and we know what they do.

... no, it's a GETTYSBURG CLASS CRUISER, as we pointed out at the start of this thread... several times...

I remember the novel "hearth of the tiger" where Blair gets somewhere assistance from one of the destroyers of the victory especially from its fighters! So the pilots are just assigned as they are useful and not really specialised more than those of carriers.

Maybe someone could get a screenshot of it. But I fairly do not remember in what mission it can be seen...

No redwolf, just because the programers don't have the room or time to add in a new ship that will only be in the game for 2 seconds, and they decide to replace it with another ship does not mean anything
