What would the best battle be to either watch in a movie or actually play in a game?

Soma and Skyfire

While those are interesting suggestions for substituting future technology for present-day stuff, they will still detract from the experience, IMHO.

It's a similar thing with the infamous Death Star Trench Run. That particular mission has been put in several Star Wars space sim games, but I think the feeling of the original movie mission has not been successfully replicated until recently, with Rogue Leader.

Erm, it was the Rebellion that attacked the DSII - the NR was formed afterwards :)

The battle of endor as well.

A way around that might be to have "movies" of fighters and cap ships fighting in the distance and have the mission setup like the last one in WCP where there's a lot of fighters that are continually regenerated...

Soma, I agree with you. If the game was set up like that the battle could be done, and it would not detract from the game. I think that the battle of Vukar tag could also be accomplished using this method.

Running with that idea I figured when you land to refuel and rearm you could also save your game and receive updated mission orders...

Multiple sortie missions are something I have yet to see in a game. Unfortunate.

Yeah, if the world needs one thing it's missions that have more than one mission in each one.

There are the ones like in WC3 where you find the right target, and then in another mission escort the Marines in... or the Prophecy ones where you go and take out turrets and then destroy during the next mission. Or the one where you land on the base... Those are like what you seem to want...

Well, a sortie counts for every time you take off. So what I meant when I said that was like how Soma said about rearming, taking back off, plus possibly going after a new and unexpected objective.

Or like in missions were the refueling transport comes in and gives you weapons. That happened several times in Prophecy. That might work in a battle situtation like the battle of Earth.

Oh, I completely agree with you, I'm just trying to give up suggestions on possibilities. (Although I don't honestly think I'd like my route.) And I also agree with TC, you'd have to keep the nav points "too far from each other," which would also detract from the effect.

What if you kept the Nav points far apart, but around you you could see ships exploding and fighting? That certainly would add to the effect...?

It would kindda be like this:

Remember in Return of the Jedi when Luke is looking out at the fleet fighting in space? Well, in my mind that is what it would look like from your cockpit, your flying around and you see that all around you. Little explosions and then some bigger ones with cap ships in the distance.

Yeah, but also don't have it as just 'ships in the distance' either. If you've played Klingon Academy, you could be on another side of a star system, and actual events during a battle take place (ie.-certain ships blowing up). Having a battle just as a decoration would kinda suck that way.

Klingon Academy.... hmmm, I'll have to check with my friend on that because he has the game and really liked it. Perhaps he could give me some more insight into that idea, but it sounds pretty cool. Yea, having the battle in the background probably would suck, but I don't know how better a way to keep the processing power down.

You COULD have a background battle going on, just have real time events going on like radio chatter, etc.

That certainly would make the entire battle that much cooler. Even have your fighter come back to the carrier during the battle and have to go talk to the captain on the bridge.

"It's not going well son..."

"We've lost the Saratoga and the Gettysburg is on fire."

"Shields are down to 20%... intercept ships coming out of sector 12..."

"Change course to 2-1-3-2... Torpedos ready..."
