The Art of Wing Commander Arena - Part Twelve (October 19, 2007)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
By popular request, here's the original "human" fighter designed for an early concept of Wing Commander Arena which would have included all new ships. Note the line running along the top of the wing - the design was to include wide-tracking guns which could move back and forth along this bar.

This is part of a series of beautiful Wing Commander Arena concept images graciously provided by Gaia Industries. You can find the original article here. You can thank the guys at Gaia by picking up Street Trace NYC on Xbox Live Arcade!

Looks like quite the gunship. Interesting to see a chin turret as well. This would make it the first WC design to have IIRC. When I first saw it, it made me think Piranha, not sure why, but just screams that to me.

Not for lack of trying, though. The Panther and Vampire had chin turrets in their original concepts... and they still appear in the finished art.

The 'Green Salthi' on the Secret Missions SNES box has a chin turret, too.

I like the design very well but if it had been implemented in the game, I would said that it does not look very WC-ish. Though of course, since Arena is set well into the future, styl can change.

Still, my first thought was that it would fit well with the FS ships.

Reminds me a bit of the mirage from Starlancer... and I have that feeling of seen that kind of cockpit before...

But - nice try.
