The Art of Wing Commander Arena - Part Thirty-Four (December 3, 2007)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
This artwork was created to get 'inside the head' of a Terran. It's an attempt to express that life aboard space stations is gray, dreary and sweaty - while space itself is colorful and exciting. Such pilots paint their fighters in bright colors in order to try and capture the feeling they have while they're in space.

This is part of a series of beautiful Wing Commander Arena concept images graciously provided by Gaia Industries. You can find the original article here. You can thank the guys at Gaia by picking up Street Trace NYC on Xbox Live Arcade!

Is one of the fighters moving away a Scimitar? The left one certainly looks like one.

Picture is kick ass as well. The Terran reminds me of Hunter a bit except with a cigarette instead of cigar.

The one on the right looks more like an Arrow IMHO.

Although I'm surprised to see a Scimitar flying during Arena...I thought all of those fighters were retired midway (no pun intended) though WC1.

A Kick ass picture none the less.

The other fighter doesn't look like a Scimitar you can see that there is no gap on the bulge above the centerline.

If anything I'd say it was one of the Rapiers. The profile seems to fit.

Maybe it's a panther...

No, no, it's probably a rapier.

I'd imagine that there would be a sizable civilian market for retired scimitars. They could outgun and outrun an Orion, that's for sure.

I doubt there was much thought put into what model fighters are way out there in the distance. If they're supposed to correlate with Arena ships at all, the vertical fins on the left ship match the Centurion.

Possibly, but the two bulbs at the top of the fins make me want to think it's a Scimitar.

Wow, what an awesome picture. It seems to tell a thousand stories... maybe it's the longing stare of that pilot, but there seems to be a lot of emotions in that picture.

That really is an awesome picture. Was it ever supposed to get into the game or was it only for the designers to get in the mood?

Anyway, Scimitar is what I thought as well.

It was just to get the designers into the 'feel' of the Wing Commander universe. They had wanted to do a single player campaign and even had a whole set of missions and a storyline planned out... but they would have done original character art for that.

Academy-style Scimitar was my first reaction, too.
