thats it im all done just beat sm2 of wc1

my retro journey is officially over it started with wc4, then wc saga and then wc3, then wc2 and (so1 and so2), finally wc1 and (sm1 and sm2) that has to be a grand total of what at least over 200 missions flown. and you know what I want to thank all yall for the pro tips, helping with glitches and bugs, and generally being a great and outstanding community. I wish all messageboars were run like this one.

so here are some of my general thoughts on sm2, its a fun expansion but to me not as great as sm1, I thought the whole subplot of maniac going crazy was fine until the usually very bright Col. Halycon put him on ya wing for the final two missions (there is no way he should have been cleared to fly.) but to be honest he caused no problems for me. I even got the medal of valor for keeping him alive I guess. then on the final mission he got 4 kills even though he stole 2 from me basically lol. I really like the story of the Firekkans I just wish they showed up in more games. I understand why they are not in wc3 and wc4 it would be too expensive to create them, but it would have been cool to see at least one in wc2, (yes I know they are in the novels more.) I loved flying the dralthi and did not think they were as bad as some think on here. I thought sneaking up on the enemy trying to take out the transport ship was fun. the only thing I didnt like about them, is I thought it was too easy to lose a turret, and the fact you could not eject.

I did encounter more bugs/glitches but none game breaking. on the final escort the drayman mission it flew all the way back to the claw without me and never encountered the enemy between nav 3 and the claw, so that was a good glitch. then on the mission where you had to wipe the enemy completely out. I know at least one enemy escapes so I checked all nav pts, but when I got back to the claw's check pt. the tiger claw was gone so I had to eject. it still counted as a successful mission for me though. although I feel like I should have gotten two medals, all I got was the one for ejecting and surviving.

I think SM2 had the easiest final mission of all the final missions of wc1 or wc2 and their expansions, the only final mission that is easier is wc4 final mission. also as a whole I found sm2 to be far easier than sm1 by a long shot.

anyways in the next couple of days im going to write a comparative review of wc1 and wc2 and it will include all their expansions. anyways thanks again for all the help

I was reading some of the bios and I thought I rescued hobbes in sm2 when he defected but according to the bio it was hunter, did I rescue a different kilrathi cap ship or was it changed from the game to the novel.

Blair was not used or referenced as a character in "Freedom Flight", so his actions were assigned to other characters.

ya know with a franchise that expanded into so many mediums including games, movies, tv shows, and novels I dont expect for anything to add up 100 percent, but it seems when it comes to the novels those are what considered to be the most accurate and part of the true canon. why is that, shouldnt it first always go to the games if something contradicts itself, bc that is the source material. bc without the games there is no movie, tv show, or novel. its like lord of the rings, I really enjoy the movies but the official story is the book, bc that is the origin. so take sm2, so on tha mission is the player suppose to assume he is playing as hunter rescuing hobbes, it really makes no sense to me.

You're not going to try the other games? Prophecy, Secret Ops, Armada, or Standoff?

The gameplay in WCP/SO is especially nice.

I played prophecy and the gameplay was nice but I hated the story so bad I never care to play it again just being honest and like I said on the standoff board, I tried standoff but couldnt get my controller to work without huge deadzone issues, I think its bc it was built off the wcp engine, I also had issues with wc4 but was able to overcome them, bc missiles were so deadly, but I need the aim to play standoff. the reason saga worked so well for me was bc of the engine, you could changed the controllers sensitivity and deadzone issues

Congratulations on finishing SM2! It's true that the final mission in SM2 has the least "oomph" but it's no cakewalk either. SM2 will alway hold a special place in my heart because it's the first time I got to fly a Kilrathi fighter!

I can only support this even if you had bad experiences. I am not a fan of the WCP story (or better: the way it is told)but the gameplay saved it for me. Or maybe try SOPS - I found the storytelling to be much better than in WCP, even though they nerfed the Nephilim fighters even more compared to the Terran ships.

What about Privateer and its expansion?

I do want to try priateer

Privateer/Righteous Fire is really good. If I had to guess, I've probably replayed it the most of all the games. There's nothing quite like building your fortune in those first dozen missions to get your Tarsus slightly fitted out before heading to New Detroit and starting the plot.

never played privateer can you give me some simple hints and tips without spoilers, of what I should try an go for at first

It partly depends on how you want to play Privateer... by which I mean do you primarily want to do combat? Or are you interested in the trading side of the game? A bit of both?

The first thing I usually do is pick up a better gun and a missile launcher. Other than that you primarily want to spend the first missions of the game upgrading your ship (and saving for a jump drive so you can leave the system and get better missions).

Dump your DFs for as many ImRecs as you can afford. Until you get a color radar, make sure you comm your target to make sure you're shooting at a pirate or retro, not a cop (they fly the same type of craft). Keep your engine class at least one grade better than your shield class. Tachyons are your friend, mesons are good balanced guns until you can afford better, a second laser comes first. Don't bother with plasteel armor - tungsten armor needs to be one of your first purchases. Iron or Tungsten sells well at Helen, Grain/Generic Foods/Luxury Foods sell well at Achilles and Hector; in Troy, the extra credits from trade ain't much but they do add up.

SOTWCU had a very specific list of things you should strive for first - I'll need to get into my copy to list them out for you and it's at home at the moment, so it'll be a while.

Jealous of anybody playing Privateer for the first time, brilliant little game. Go for the original from GOG and don't bother with the Gemini Gold fan-made Remake, it's not a scratch on the 1993 version.

As well as Capi's good advice, I'll throw in and say: avoid missions involving fighting the Kilrathi until you've got your Tarsus totally pimped out, or better yet you've bought an Orion. Also, when flying cargo missions either for the Merchant's Guild or from the mission computer, remember you can't fly to more than one planet at a time even though you're limited to three missions at a time, you can save your game and keep reloading until you find 3 cargo runs all to the same destination.

For smuggling, get a Galaxy and ship Ultimate from Pentonville to New Detroit for big bucks. If you get caught by a random Confed search though, there will be long term consequences - if you blow up enough Confed or Militia ships you'll soon be branded a pirate all across the sector.

Ahh...enjoy. So much for you to look forward to.

Here we go...SOTWCU, p. 418. Minasi suggests you by THIS junk first, in THIS order:
  • Dual lasers
  • Tungsten Armor (generally this is as far as your initial money gets you)
  • ImRecs
  • Afterburners
  • Engine 1
  • Dual Mesons
  • A radar that shows the color of enemies
  • ECM Level 3
  • Repair Droid
Obviously this will be before you even leave the Troy system; jump drive is not on that list. The radar I would suggest at minimum is the Hunter 6i. Avoid the radars on the left; they lack target lock, which you need in order to fire off your ImRecs. Obviously you want to wind up with the B&S Omni before everything's said and done, but that can wait until you're plying the spacelanes. The cargo expansion for the Tarsus is worth it (it's a merchant ship, after all). When you go to buy your jump drive, don't forget to pick up nav maps in the software booth if you don't want to get hopelessly lost; it's best there to buy all four at once (you'll save about 3000 credits).

Last bit of advice: don't talk to Sandoval until you're flying something other than the Tarsus unless you're looking for a real challenge. For your first rodeo, I'd suggest you be flying a fully-decked out Centurion beforehand.

If I might chip in: an afterburner is for me always rather high on the purchase list (before ImRecs e.g.). The same goes for the repair droid, saves a buttload of money on the middle run. On the mission computer, try to get multiple patrol missions for the same nav points. As danr suggested, you can get a patrol mission, save and then reload and check the mission computer again, it often will have another patrol mission for the same nav points.

Talk to the bartenders on the stations, they will tell you where to go to start/continue the story (but they also tell some fairy tales).
