Suggestion: Wingmen

Alright, it's fun to whoop that sorry @$$€$ of 20 opponents with autotracker guns, but sometimes it doesn't feel right. A good idea to make the universe more alive would be wingmen. I don't know the exact capabilities of Vega Strike, but it should be possible to add in practical wingman commos. Also, a suggestion for acquiring wingmen:
1. Freelance wingmen a la Tachyon. You hire them as they come with their own ship, all equipped. Very easy to get by, but you cannot change their equipment and they demand a hiring fee and high cuts from missions.
2. More loyal companions (maybe robot pilots or some sort of AI) whom you give your own ship. They are cheaper and a good solution to use old ships, and you can change their equipment. A possible "late-game" solution.
All wingmen, especially the latter type, should have a very good AI and even communicate with you when they killed an enemy or need your help.

And for spiritplumber: That would be applyable for carriers, too.

Sounds good, but you're in the wrong forum. This forum is called Priv Remake, and it's about re-making Privateer exactly like the original. There's another forum here called WCU, or Wing Commander Universe, where people are more receptive to new ideas. That's because there were two camps: Some wanted fidelity and strict adherence to cannon, and are colloquially called Retros; and a camp of people who felt it was okay to add new things to make the game more interesting, and are colloquially known as AWACS (Armed Workers Against Cannon Slavery). The association of these camps to the Remake and WCU forks is not official, however; and there are sub-factions within the camps, but I'm just giving you a quick and dirty overview of the situation, the way I percieve it... ;-)

Well. I thinks its okay to add new stuff in WCU, but i think the *remake* should be as close to the original game as possible. So i'm actually quite happy with the situation as it it.

These are insanely stupid terms and I'm going to start handing out the worst possible avatars for people who use them.

If you can't spell 'canon' (or even use the word properly), you shouldn't be using it.

i have to say that adherence to the way things are supposed to were properly is what will make it fun. not some

"I WANT TO FLY DRAYMAN'S WITH FORTY TURRETS AND A SQAUDRON OF DRAGON FIGHTERS, AND FOR GOOD MEASURE HAVE A DEMON STANDING BY IN CASE MY SUPER SHIP FROM HADES IS INCAPABLE OF DEFEATING THEM SO I THEN HOP INSIDE OF MY UBER-LEET (tm) DEMON WITH FOUR AUTOTRACKING FUSION CANNONS, TACHYON GUNS ON MISSILE MOUNTS, LEVEL 76 ENGINES AND SHIELDS AND THEN, TO TOP IT ALL OFF I'M GOING TO SLOW DOWN ALL THE ENEMY SHIPS BECAUSE I SUCK AS A PLAYER AND HAVE TO GIMP OUT THE ENEMY SO I CAN HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!ONEONE!!!!11111ELEVEN!!!!1111"

i think this is a pretty close apporximation to the stuff i've heard from the other side of the proverbial tracks. yay for you guys you're like every other sci-fi series fan base where the starship enterprise has the death star laser beam and twelve sun crusher torpdos because you know, one is excessive. or where you have a victory class star destroyer fly through a dimension time-hole and use its mighty ion cannons to disable and enslave the federation. or you create this uber-leet fan fiction where this one federation ship with like, seventy bajillion phaser banks and qaud lasers, and....and...and freaking tasty snacks, and beverages to boot.

WC sticks to its definates in ships, weapons, etc...etc...granted, there are those wierd crazy spin-off groups but they mainly keep to themselves and in no way proclaim to be accurate, nor true to the originals. the terms are pretty dumb too. woo! 'retros' and 'awacs' who the HELL came up with 'awacs'? some idiot college kid who recently learned of global socialism and thought they were being clever? no...you're not clever, you're a moron.

i think you get my point. it all amounts to a bunch of fan wishlists or lists of things people who have never played the originals, nor read the novels, or delved deep into the contents on the CIC to gain a better knowledge and understanding of WC and all that makes it freaking sweet. you want to play freelancer, or freespace (don't get me wrong, good games.....but nothing in there is good for WC) by all means, go play them. DON'T insist that Wing Commander become them. Neither game stacks up to WC, never will.....never can.

No, Brad, you are vastly exaggerating the other side, and putting words in out mouths. When did I ask for 40 turrets on Draymans? The discussion has oscillated between 3 and 6. Now, have I ever put words in YOUR mouth, or exaggerated your position?

LOAF: I'm sorry I mispelled canon; I'm not really used to the word. English is my second language.

^Retro^ @ BradMick

Just joking. Please dont kill me. I hontestly dont see what harm calling anyone a Retro or AWACS is causing to warrent that kind of attack. I know this is the remake forum and have pointed the sugestions/improvements people over to WCU forum.

If the Retro / AWACS thing offends you I can stop using it. Honestly I cant understand why you would be offended. And I am sorry but I never have and never will accept an answer like "because its dumb". And calling people morons seems a little excessive.

Can I have my worst possable avatar now! :)

No reasonable argument was ever won by inventing blanket slurs for the people you disagree with.

The fact is that we've already seen how fanboy changes unbalance the game -- look at the Demon in the current release. Privateer has limitations that exist for a reason... it's not just for some slavish adherence to the past (though such may be necessary to make the remake Hellcat claims to have wanted) that people take issue with sweeping changes made without thought.

Sorry I just dont see how Retro and AWACS are slurs. But if you feel as such Ill stop using them. I alwas read them as an easer way of saying; people that prefer a strict adherence to canon; and those that don't.

FYI I do find that people that use spelling mistakes or typos to insinuate ingnorace or stupidity (of the topic) insulting and degrading. Not everyone is blessed with perfect spelling or typing skills. For some english is a second language. For others often its a learning disorder like dyslexia (my case). If you are promoting tolerance by not using Retro or AWACS then please stop being prejudiced aginst those that may not (or can't ) have mastered the writen english language. Thank you.

Err, "Retro" is a slur even in the context of the game. The fictional group is the "Church of Man", and 'retro' is what they're called as an insult.

AWACS is just an awful acronym - I saw it that 'flyable ships' thread and considered pointing out that they're called SWACSses in Wing Commander.

Your spelling complaint is baseless. "Cannon" instead of "canon" is one of two embarassing community errors I will call every time. It's not the fault of the poster having a different first language -- it's the fault of a large group of the community who uses the word incorrectly.

(The other is 'Nephilium' instead of Nephilim. I don't know where that comes from.)

Yeah, there was a time, not long, long ago, when Retros called AWACS's "fan boys", which IS derogatory, as it is blurted seriously, not jokingly; get my drift LOAF?
By the way, my English is not *that* bad, is it?

Having initiated the 'Retros' term in my manifesto, LOAF, you should know I agree.

It was something I introduced simply for shorthand, not in a derogatory manner.

(I was looking for a quick way of referring to each side. Retros worked for the high-fidelity crowd at first glance. I acknowledge now, however, that it may not be the best.)

AWACS, however, is the single-dumbest group shorthand I've ever heard. Especially when you can't spell canon properly.

No, I'll take responsibility, for I knew I didn't know the word, and just tried to make out its meaning from context, and didn't even bother looking it up in the dictionary. I should have. Point well taken.

Your English isn't bad at all.

Seriously, though, stop using those stupid terms.

I certainly appreciate what you were trying to do - I know from your original post that it wasn't meant in a negative manner... but unfortunately you were writing to give voice to a group of people who don't really understand moderation or tact.

Everything intelligent you said became "HAHA A FUNNY WORD I CAN REPEAT!!!!" to the people you were defending.

No, I'll take responsibility, for I knew I didn't know the word, and just tried to make out its meaning from context, and didn't even bother looking it up in the dictionary. I should have. Point well taken.

It's not just you, though - it shows up throughout the fandom. I'll post my "cannon" picture as soon as I can get it off my camera...

*chuckles* For some reason I KNEW I was going to get flamed while writing that post, but I thought about it and could not tell why, so I said "what the heck!" and clicked on Submit. ROTFLMAO! I should trust my gut feelings... :D

Anyways, changing the subject a bit: Who the flip are the Nephilim? In WCU they always attack New Constantinople and blow it to pieces. Maybe not anymore, though; haven't seen it happen since I restarted the game. I used to go around New Constantinople and tractor their ships into my Paradigm's cargo; had like two dozen of them at one point...

EDIT:
Couldn't talk to them either... ( 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 0 Request for landing ).

The Nephilim are the enemy in Wing Commander Prophecy and Wing Commander Secret Ops. They attack Kilrathi space in 2681.

Okay, the Retro/AWACS thing is just a JOKE... sheesh take it easy :) you could say that both factions are at least somewhat evil either way (AWACS looked like "the good guys" in campaign to me, if it wasn't for all the talk about blood.... eew... wait I got it! AWACS are secretly financed by... wait for it.... SPACE VAMPIRES!!!!!)

Seriously -- WCU is a LOT less defined than Priv remake, so right now everthing is in flux. The Drayman has six turrets UNLESS it's owned by Confed then it has five turrets with better guns. All this is subject to change, in fact we would like feedback -- right now it's more about "how does it feel like in gameplay" than "how close to canon it is".

For the record, right now the WCU Demon is LESS powerful than the Remake Demon -- that thing seriously needed nerfing.

Ok LOAF. I read your posts like 5 or 6 times. I still think you were rather rude about the spelling thing. But I understand it was just the one word "canon". Because of how often it is misused. Am I correct?
