Well I do see the point. However I think the more ideas that are out here, the better chances of great mods and other things would come of it.
For all we know, this person might have models in the works, or has someone doing them, or not. Who knows! Perhaps a modeler will see the ideas and tinker around one weekend and next thing you see on WCCIC news front page is an image of that model..thanks to "so so" from the boards. Then new threads pop up with folks asking "when can we download that, what mod will it work with, is it done yet...is it done yet...is it done yet..."
You are being more idealistic then realistic.
Let's face it, most mods and other fan projects don't finish. UE finished, Standoff and Saga is close to being completed. I can think up of many other mods that were started, but soon run out of steam. Wing Commander Marine Corps, the Fleet Action Homeworld mod and Starsaint's counterpart to it, that Starfleet Command mod. They are D-E-A-D. There's very few other mods that 1) have the capability to finish or 2) have a staff mature enough to know what should and what shouldn't be completed.
There is a fine line between good practicality and sheer fanboy stupidity. The only trait needed to figure it out are people who have major experience in the WC fan community. These usually require people were around when WC first came out, or other people were around when the WC internet fan community first started out. There's very few people of these categories still here on the boards because . . . time and life moves on.
And let's face it, most of the wannabe mod maker are young, idealistic naive teenagers who only started playing the games a few years ago. When WC first came out, some of these guys were still in diapers. They don't have the maturity to know what is right or what is wrong. They hadn't experienced the needed team-work skills nor the charisma and leadership to "take charge", much less do it virtually over the internet with people who they'll never meet. There are very very very few teenagers who have the needed qualities to make a good fan project.
But most importantly, reputation is everything in this community. It begins the moment you post your first thread/response. The people who give bad first impresions don't go very well, especially with the opinion of the dwindling WC veterans, who (let's face it) can make or break someone in this community. When you make your mod or project, what do the restof the community know about you? Are you the 13-year old who posted 50 n00bie fAnB0y posts on his first day on the CIC, or a guy who worked hard and doesnt brag about his accomplishments, he let's his work talk for himself.
Now you, RFBurns, are putting blind faith and thinking that everyone who works on a WC project has the necessary temperment, maturity, willpower to not only complete any fan project they want, but to make it the best damn project ever. To think that every project that has started is going to finish, and be a credit to the community, and is going to be completed by 13-14 year old teenagers . . . is living in a dream world.
