Star Citizen Pulls In $40 Million! (March 12, 2014)

There's another incredible milestone on the books over at Roberts Space Industries. The Cloud Imperium team has now collected more than $40 million from fans pledging towards Star Citizen. Over 200 people are now employed across several global studios to build the game. They've ended a run of star system unlocking and are now moving on to more exotic reward tiers. At $42 million, the built-in "Galactapedia" will see enhancements in style, scope and user interface. There will also be a new ship - the Gladius, and last, but not least, a virtual towel! If you're a backer over at RSI, you can join the WCCIC organization here.

Gladius ? The Squadron 42 team will develop an additional fighter for the game, the Aegis Dynamics Gladius-class light fighter. The Gladius will be the first fighter built entirely from concept to CryEngine in the UK! Here?s the official description: The Aegis Gladius is the UEE?s reigning light short-range patrol fighter. A single-seat ship with no room for expansion, the Gladius is fast, maneuverable and capable of punching far above its weight. The main advantage to the design is simplicity: cheap to produce, easy to repair and outfit and quick to train new pilots on. The Gladius is an aging design nearing the end of its life-cycle, although iterative updates have kept it the most nimble fighter in the active fleet.

Towel ? And of course, everyone who backs before we hit $42 million will also receive a towel for their hangar. Don?t explore the galaxy without it!

Remember that our stretch goals are examples, ways of showing you how we are improving the game with the additional funding and ways to thank you for your early support. The full impact of each additional dollar is actually felt across the board: the project currently employs over 200 people. As a result, every dollar allows us to support this large team and helps improve Star Citizen in both scope and scale.

Nice to see the Gladius reference. I liked the original; pity you never got to fly it as part of one of the mainstream series.

I don't even think the Gladius was an intentional reference - it came to us via the Foundry 42 UK team.

I am just slighlty depressed that SC got 40 Millions of crowdfundind while Georges Oldziey's WC music kickstarter is about to fail getting 35 thousand dollars. That's pocket change compared to Star Citizen ! If every citizen pledged 4 cents Georges's campaign would make it. 4 cents ! Or we'd make it if 00.18% of the SC backers would pledge the 20$ level that gets digital download of the music. Zero-percent-dot-eighteen !

Well, nothing's lost yet but I do agree that it seems to be a close call (and far from getting the next stretch goal). I'm surprised as well, considering the amount of money some backers have invested in SC (with quite some not so tangible rewards as a CD with music) - I thought the pledge levels with the Leather Jacket and the Kilrathi WC 3 gun (how awesome is that!) would be long gone by now.

Maybe that's exactly the problem; WC fans have sunk so much into Star Citizen that they cannot bring themselves to pledge another significant chunk of money on anything else. Besides, I'd venture to suggest that at this point, the majority of Star Citizen backers never actually played any of the Wing Commander games. It may have been different early on, but since the original funding campaign there have been many new folks that clearly do not know of CR's previous work.

Geez, when I look at a the fundraising stats for SC... a very bad day racks 44 kilodollars, more than enough to blast Georges's campaign through its streachgoals :(

Anyway, I just upgraded my pledge, I hope many others will.

Btw. TNGS: What Team gets your vote?
I give it to 3Dingo. I like the Pelican Look from the Halo dropship.
Overall my favorite is IXM. The updated model..... WOAAAA!
I would buy one for my fleet ;)

I dislike the 3Dingo one, don't know why. Maybe because it looks like from Halo. Very generic.
For me it was between Eris and VisionCut. I voted for Eris.

The IXM thing is really cool. Although I also liked the more streamlined first version as well, minus some stuff. The second version is definitely better, although it loses some of the look and feel from the original one.
