Space Quest

it appears that amazon lists both the "compilation" and the "Collection" versions of Space Quest. however the description of the "compilation" clearly notes, both versions of SQ1, now the only review states that he was shipped the "collection" version wich as Madman pointed out, does not have the original version, just the remake...
The description of the "compilation" lists only 5 games out of the 6, however the picture of the box of the "compilation" shows all 6 games....this is too much to process....

There was a Green covered collection set that came out on CD before SQ6 was released and therefore only had SQ1-5. I think there's a similar Kings Quest set, and yes I believe it had both the EGA and VGA versions of SQ1. The 1-6 set came out fairly recently and is the one full of dosboxes.

ah yeah, as i recall when i bought my copy of the collection (pre the dosbox supported versions) there was two copies of the collection, one with sq6 and one without!

so i guess one question is, should i get the "Collection" with all six and the remake of SQ1...or look for the "Compilation" with both...
it could be prefrence, but the vga looks nice...but the ega was the original...ah fond memories...
for a replay..i could go for the vga...

personally, i find it irritating to play the fan sq0 in ega, get sq1 in pretty vga then have to dip down to ega again for sq2 - i dont mind the old graphics, but its nicer to progressively get better! - although the ega versions all run in scummvm these days so there is some advantage to them ;)

Yeah, I hated that part... SQ1 in VGA, then drop down in EGA or worse for SQ2. Especially since the VGA remake included a nice pointy-clicky interface.

i was checking on Ebay, there is a copy ging for under $10 not bad for the entire collection, yes this one is the vga of SQ1. Thanks

Walking with the arrow keys and typing are part of the charm of the original Sierra games. With the mouse interface, you don't get the excitement of dashing past the drips of acid under the surface of Kerona or thrill of figuring out that "open trunk" (instead of "open box" or any other synonym) was the phrase you needed to figure out.

Hehe, Space Quest VI included a sequence where you have to jump a chasm inside Stellar Santiago's head, which you do so by... double-clicking very quickly. (I don't think you even die if you're too slow... you just stop short).

Got to love SQ still got all the games on FDD and the special collectors edition CD-Rom version with the voiced versions of the games :)

From time to time I still get out the free Galatic Inquirer copy protection newspaper you got with SQ5 and have a read, aah fun times.

"Thanks for playing Space Quest IV. As usual, you've been a real pantload!"

"We rejoin our friend and semi-hero, Roger Wilco..."

"That's right. You have no head. That darn pool must have been filled with acid. You obviously can't go on living that way."

Hmm, I remember playing this game at my brother's once, in the mid nineties if I recall correctly... It started with some kind of space station, with the player character washing the windows. Then some alien 'bad-guys' showed up and killed everyone with lightning and you had to walk around on the base/ship and... do stuff, and the bad guys on the bridge would sort of just ignore you... It was along time ago and my English wasn't any good back then, but everything I know about the Space Quest series makes me think it was part of that... still, none of the games I've seen in action looks quite right.

Anyone have any idea what game this was? It would be fun to give it another try.

i just receivd my ebay purchase of the Space Quest Collection...yes, i cant wait to play them...i remember laughing at all the different ways Roger Wilco dies...

That was the Space Quest VI demo, with a completely original and independent plot from the actual game (complete with lion-man 'CAPTAIN KIELBASA').

Here's the most comprehensive Space Quest fansite I know:
http://www.spacequest.net

It has the Space Quest 6 demo Bob McDob mentioned, and the collection of minigames AD mentioned. It also has vast swathes of trivia on each game in the series. Unfortunately their last news update was in 2006.

Incidentally, while you can run most Space Quests with DOSBox (which you already installed to play WC1 to WC4, right?) there's now a more specialised tool that's easier to configure. ScummVM just this month added support for Sierra's SCI games. This is on top of the AGI support it had for years. (The early low-resolution EGA games like SQ1 and SQ2 used AGI - the Adventure Game Interpreter. The later games, from KQ4 and SQ3 onwards, used SCI - the Sierra Creative Interpreter.) This is an astounding achievement; the later SCI games seemed so quirky, I assumed they would be impossible to emulate.

Cool I have an old collection from the mid 90's. I don't know if that demo is in there. I'll have to look.

Didn't I hear that they had a roland emulator in the ScummVM as well?

QFG IV had great sound effects with roland. I could get roland to partly work in Dosbox.

ScummVM can emulate a Roland MT-32, but only if you have the ROMs, which are copyright. If you happen to have an MT-32 and the right tools you can extract the ROMs yourself, but if you own an original MT-32 you can use it directly anyway.

If you just want to hear the music again, Quest Studios has a huge archive of Sierra game music. Make sure you download the digital audio versions (MP3 and OGG files) - these were recorded through an MT-32 so the rest of us can hear the music as it was meant to sound. Happy listening.
