Silent Hunters

I picked up Silent Hunters 3 over last week, and like with so many other things, I figured that no matter how cool it was it can be made better with lasers. I got to thinking a mod for SH making all the ship Wing Commander-y would probably be pretty fun. Heck, we have most of the resources we need: There are plenty of great modelers around here (or we could just borrow from someone else,) blueprints, tech info... You name it, we have it. The biggest problem I see is getting the game out of the water. Once we can do that, the rest should be simple. Unfortunately, I lack the skills needed to actually do any of that, but I could do design work, mission building and the like. Come on, just think how cool this would be from the bridge of a Terran destroyer-

Wing Commander settings notwithstanding, what's your current overall impression of the game as it stands from 'the factory', as we say? :)

Lots of fun. Submarine combat has been something I've liked since I was a little kid... mostly because that's what I kind of thought space combat would be like. However, the game itself is very intense. Sitting 3 meters off the ocean floor, running silent, and hoping to god you don't hear a ping... And then there's the perfectly set ambush on a helpless merchant, the thrill of seeing a carrier topple over and slipping away before the escorts notice you.
EDIT: On that note, I just had an amusing experience. I was attacking a destroyer with my deck guns, and he comes about to face me. Now we're staring straight at eachother, and I get a solution for my torps. I fire tube 2, and 15 seconds later I am rewarded with a massive explosion. Crisis averted, right? No, and with the smile still on my face, he nails me as I try to simultaneously make a hard turn and crash dive. He nails my tower, and by this point it's too late to abort my dive. All hands were lost.

That really is a fun game. Can't find my disks though. :( Tip for those pesky destroyers... on a convoy attack run, if you can get two of them relatively close with you in between, you can draw enough fire that misses that they will likely hit each other... and as soon as you crash dive, they will forget you and will tear each other apart. (I have yet to try this with battleships but suspect the outcome would be amusing.)

I like the MSPaint screenshot... although those things are what, 400M long? Good luck hiding that in the North Sea (also there's rather slim chance of dodging depth charges)
