Several Command & Conquer Games Now Open-Source

Master O

Petty Officer

Games that have been open-sourced are:

Command & Conquer (Tiberian Dawn)
Red Alert
C&C Renegade
C&C Generals: Zero Hour

I wonder if that means we'll ever get a similar code release for Wing Commander 1 - 5....

It's great to see, and I have to wonder how it even came about...

It'll be awesome to have a copy of Generals which actually runs (easily) on modern Windows in widescreen etc., or (longer-term) a patched-up Renegade. I quite enjoyed Renegade... When it worked. :D

Fingers crossed for more releases! I don't have high hopes for WC (and other Origin stuff), but it'd be amazing!

I don't think they have enough Wing Commander source code to do something like this. Maybe Wing Commander Prophecy!

It would be amazing if any of the Wing Commander games got source code releases. It would pave the way for people to port the games to other operating systems and CPU architectures, fix the bugs in the original games, and open them up for modding. If a Wing Commander source code release was done, I can definitely see this happening, especially because of how passionate this community is!

But I have many theories about why game developers almost never release their source code, and unfortunately, the last time the community asked for a Wing Commander source code release, it wasn't taken very kindly by both the original developers and the majority of the community members at the time.

Now at least, if EA is asked again about this topic, people can point to C&C's source code release.

Also, although it's not an EA intellectual property, Freespace 2's open sourcing would be a good model for Wing Commander if the Wing Commander source codes are ever released. (https://www.hard-light.net/ and https://fsnebula.org/knossos/)
