Selling Freedom Flight (August 11, 2012)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
Ever wonder how Baen got the first Wing Commander novel into the stores? Probably not, but here's the answer to the question you didn't ask! It's interesting that there's really very little focus on it being a WING COMMANDER book and a lot on the fact that Mercedes Lackey has a whole host of succesful fantasy series' to her credit. Bonus: it's very, very pink.

Maybe it's because it's not a genre I like that much, but I didn't even find out how well-known Mercedes is for her other work until a few years ago. Remind me: how involved was she with the novel? It wasn't one of those shadow author cases, was it?

It was not. Unlike many other collaborations, Ellen Guon and Mercedes Lackey were true writing partners (who had already done an original novel together, and continued to write together after Freedom Flight.)

Mercedes Lackey was actually closely tied to Origin... her husband, Larry Dixon, was an artist on Wing Commander II!
