Rescuing Earth on losing path

Hi Pilots!

First I have to say, that the losing path has some really interesting missions! Wow!

But now my question - in one of the last missions:
Is it possible to get all enemy bombers down with our Arrows?

Or is it part of the mission to loose here?

Greetings...

I can't believe! It´s a second winning path! Yehaw! :)

But does anybody know where the losing path is?

In one mission I lost the Leyte Golf so the Firekka couldn't rejoin the rest of the fleet. But that doesn't seem to be enough to loose.

Yes, you can shoot down all the bombers - it's tough, but it's doable.

Now, if you're looking for the kind of losing path that can only end with defeat (like in WC3), then the answer is that there isn't any such thing in Standoff. Our losing path (and yes, the Arrow mission is on the losing path) still gives you an opportunity to win - remember, the Firekka isn't so crucial that its absence would guarantee a Kilrathi victory :).

However, some of the missions of the losing path do allow you to lose completely. To see the losing ending, you have to either lose the Firekka and the Landreich carriers during the mission where you jump into Sol (the one right before the Arrow mission), or you have to fail to intercept the Strontium-90 missiles in the final mission.

Yep, took me a while to find the lose-lose ending, but when I did, it was rather depressing.

As for the Flight of the Arrow mission, I initially failed to get all of the bombers, so the next time I went for the leading bombers first instead of the trailing ones. That way, the leading bombers didn't get away and I accomplished the mission.

That's the key. I first got 50% of bombers and scratched my head for moment before realizing you have to first hunt the bombers farthest away.

Hehe, I'm sure anyone who's ever played X-Wing or TIE Fighter had that figured out pretty quickly :).

This was one of the funnest missions I scripted for the final episode. I personally really wasn't a fan of the winning path missions - all those big battles got on my nerves. But, they had to be done - so we kept this mission as one of the last ones to be made, leaving it as a kind of reward for getting everything else done.

Speaking of X-Wing... This mission where you escort Rapiers flown by technicians - I vaguely remember similar mission in B-Wing campaign. Anyway, thanks for the great game - its one of the best mods I have ever played! I'll try to write some more thoughts about Standoff in a few days.

Yeah, there were a lot of escort missions of that kind in X-Wing. I think I might have not made the Rapiers suck enough, though - they still handled the cats pretty well, which shouldn't have been the case.

Yeah, I think there is some truth to that. Ultimately getting them all through alive was far easier then I thought it should have been.

Well, sure, they were a bunch of tech, but I bet they had some spare time to play around on the simulator :)

Aye, they did indeed, which was really helpful given you're stuck in a Stiletto for that mission. I really liked the contrast in the flavour of their speech as compared with the standard macho banter of your regular wingmen. Even if they tended to repeat themselves rather frequently.

It was nice when the civilians in Sacrifice scored some kills too, although the majority of them did die pretty quickly. ):

It really is nice to see
the civilians having a crack at the cats isn't it?
Except in my version of Standoff I'd switched the Tarsus for the Raptor to make the early pirate missions more challenging - but forgot I'd done this, and later on,
found civilians in Raptors,
hurling torpedos at the Snakeir. Needless to say, I switched them back to Tarsus.

Thanks for all answers!

>>the Firekka isn't so crucial that its absence would guarantee a Kilrathi victory<<

It´s hard to figure out that Bradshaw is not the center of the universe like Blair in WC 3 & 4, but with some time I will come over it ^^

@Wedge: Thanks for the advice to get the leading bombers first. But even with this tactics it took another five times for me to rescue every single human on Earth. And every time I just got 91% of them. This made me believe, that there is no chance...

Another thing I want to honor: Really great music on losing path! Especially in fighting. Where is it from?

And again: Great missions! Especially the Arrow mission and the little rescue mission (with a single crossbow) too! A lot of fun!

I never thought to see WC again after Prophecy, a dream comes true...

If you're talking about the episode 5 music, it's all original track from our music guy Michael Mahadeen. I am sure he'll be glad you like it !

Hehe I nagged Quarto for months so he'd allow me to squeeze that rescue mission in there, glad to see it was worth the trouble :D

Although we didn't catch the bug in Ep5 losing until after many had already played this mission. You know the one where we forced you to fly the Stiletto when that was only supposed to happen as punishment for losing too many ships in Ep4... :p

It is possible to kill 100%. You just have to be... really quick.

I was lucky to find that Crossbow rescue mission - it does presuppose that one of your wingmen ejects in the previous patrol.

As for the Stiletto mission... I thought that was deliberate, as in a last chance to fly the flimsy craft before you continue with the Rapiers and Sabres.

Quarto

Unknown Enemy
The Stiletto was deliberate on the winning path, but on the losing path, it was only supposed to happen if the player lost his Rapiers. Not sure why, come to think of it - it would have made sense to give the player a farewell Stiletto mission on the losing path as well.

uff one of the few missions i can not beat at nightmare ^^

Thanks for my new Computer i can finally fly again, without any crashes.

I Lve th elosing missions more than the whinnig path, but still, it is just a very good work. I love this Game^^
I love his idea.... a almost impossible Mission to save Earth. Much better than the never ending Kilrathi attack ending in WC III ^^
Just love it!

And now it is time to get some highscores in the sim.
