reasonable predictions for a new WC game

We have reason to believe that there *is* a Wing Commander game in development -- we just don't know if this specific project is that same title.

I have one hope for the new game: coop capability in the main campaign. WC just begs for this (flying with real wingmen for once!)

Otherwise, it will probably build on the Nephilim story, at least indirectly. They did with C&C3 and it worked - can't see why they wouldn't do the same with WC.

Arena did that, and I would bet on something continuing from Arena, but any type of prequel or Kilrathi War era setting is also very possible.

I agree -- there are a few co-op modes in older games, but this really should be a major *focus* of a future Wing Commander game (Origin did some early work on this concept, called 'Strike Team'... but it was cancelled.)

I would bet on seeing the Kilrathi as the enemy, no matter where the actual story continues. They're Wing Commander's "familiar" villain.

could they not think about remaking WC1 and WC2 and maybe 3 and 4 with today's tech they could make them epic games and if they go multi format for one the ps3 blue ray disks have tons of space plus would also like to see a game about the start of the Kilrathi war maybe they could build that in to WC1

but don't think remakes are the done thing in gaming

one thing would be good but would be a whole new kind of game for the series anyone ever play mass effect and star knights of the old republic 1 that kind of game bioware could do it as they made both these games and are masters at them

I rather like the idea of a total remake of Wing Commander 1 and 2, done to take advantage of the bleeding edge in hardware the way the original games did when they were first released. Not the likeliest thing in the world, but we can dream...

Honestly, I'd rather see a new story about the Kilrathi War examined instead of a remake. Besides, we're far more likely to see something like this come to fruition.

WC1 and 2 are so great the way they are. Why not start a new chapter with new characters, obstacles and victories?

I want to go back to the joystick part of the discussion...

Remember the Remastered X-Wing/Tie-Figter and newer X-Wing Alliance that forced to have a joystick? I bought a joystick just to play that! : P

True enough. New content is always better than old content remade, assuming it's done right- but if I could get both.... well, one can always dream, right?

This is true. The games have stood the test of time... which is why a remake of them would still function just as well in my eyes. Both versions would be worth playing over and over again.

People always seem to forget that we already have a WC1 remake... (SWC).

Granted it isn't new.

I know full well about SWC, but I want a new remake dang you... although, now I want it to include SWC's extra missions about the aftermath of the sivar!

Some time ago I would have favoured a WC 1 remake as well but I have changed my mind. It'd be too risky there almost certainly would have been things I liked better in the original. Face it, WC 1 was pretty perfect why make it new? Just for the graphics? Then I'd like a new story with it as well.

How about a different view of 2654 Vega campaign - maybe as a pilot of the TCS Kyoto (And you'd actually get to fly with Blair in Venice...)

That's something I'd think would be very neat.

Of course, there are plenty of time periods not yet explored (between WC 1 and 2 e.g.) but having something set during the same time as another game would be great, as it would make it possible for new fans to enter and have nice moments for the older fans (à la "Have you heard? The Tiger's Claw pilots captured a Ralari"!)

Hmm, I don't really remember: is the Ralari captured in the WC 1/2 guide?

I'd actually be interested in the period prior to this. The 2640's are the blank decade in WC. We know it was a time when several pilots amassed massive kill scores because of kilrathi tactics. I'd like to fly in those massive furballs when the war was still fairly young.

This would actually be pretty neat. We'd get to see some of the old battleship style warships in operation while the transition to fighter combat as a principle means of attack was still happening.

You could go from being a nice extra at the beginning to becoming the most important component of the feel by the end. Maybe initially you're a frustrated champion of the starfighter, initially ignored and ridiculed by the brass...

Personally I think one thing they MUST do is eliminate the formulaic mission format WC got bogged down in.
Launch - Auto pilot, kill enemies, auto pilot, nothing there, auto pilot, kill enemies, etc.
One thing that made Freespace trump WC was that you sat there escorting some hulking transports, knowing something was going to happen but not what and not when or where from. The tension this built was incredible.
All you'd really need to accomplish this would be to eradicate the auto pilot button. Sure missions would take longer bbut they'd be much more fun.

One of the biggest gripes people had with the saga prologue was no autopilot and the guys eventually figured out how to put it in. It still makes you re-listen to all the dialogue over and over if you fail but at least there isn't the long drawn out waste of time.

Since almost no one (you excepted) thinks sitting around endlessly is fun, autopilot makes perfect sense in most circumstance. I think having more randomized behavior with enemies we don't see going about their buisness when you're not around would liven things up somewhat in the "formulaic" department, as would finding better ways of communicating space geography to the player (also you *can* fly manually between nav points in WC. Most people don't bother). Don't forget that at it's heart WC has always been an arcade shooter.

That said, having more varied objectives is definitely something a new WC should attempt to do. I came up with a neat "behind enemy lines" kind of concept which would meld the privateer style navigation with regular objective based WC gameplay that might be cool as the player tries to make his (or his band of escaped POWs or something) way back to confed space.
