Ranks/Units in Pilgrim Truth

Rear Admiral
Hello,

Just a couple of quick questions:

-Why is Hunter a Captain? In the film he was Lieutenant and it seems that this book is following that same continuity/re-imagining

-Navy and a Space Force? Slightly confused by this. The way I understand it is in the original games the pilots were all part of a space force that flew (essentially) flew off navy ships. But it seems in the movie that everyone is part of the Confederation Navy. But I also remember seeing mention of a Space Force in the Confed Handbook.

Thanks in advance!

I guess Hunter got promoted after the movie, and yeah the line between Space Force and Navy seems to blur at times. I'm not sure exactly where it is though

Ah, the answer is that Telep didn't know he was a Lieutenant in the movie. The third draft script he had for reference doesn't have Maniac saying his rank. In fact, Telep actually uses Captain--from Claw Marks--when he introduces Hunter in the movie novelization... so he's likely following that.

Add to the that the fact that the Space Force pilots, flying off Navy ships, also perform soldier-like duties as Marines... gah!

Reminds me of Space: Above and Beyond, with the pilots also specifically trained for ground combat missions. Always thought that was a little strange, but hey, maybe in the future military specialisation is a thing of the past! At least until WC4 & Dekker etc. etc.

That would be an interesting story - a squad of Marines based on a carrier doing all the dirty work. Would make a good mod project...

Heh, it wasn't supposed to be pilots-as-marines in the movie. In the original cut, Blair is the turret gunner on the Diligent and follows the marines aboard after Merlin detects Wilson communicating with the Tiger Claw.

Yeah I know - explains why he's the only person we see on the Kilrathi ship huh? Damn budget cuts! >> /offtopic [slaps self in face]

Heh, no, that's because they were trying to cut out as much footage of the Kilrathi as possible. :) I believe there was a good amount of footage of marines fighting on the ship (which is why so much marine armor shows up at auction.)

(Angel is also with the marines, which prompted Peter Telep's in-universe explanation that she came along because she trained on a captured Dorkir... based on the idea that the concom was likely a converted Dorkir, like the concom in WC1. D'oh.)

Thanks for that, guys. Had a feeling it was just a typo or something. I personally just read it as Lt. everytime I saw it. As for the pilots being marines... it is a little hard to digest. However it's no different to JAG lawyers always being the action heroes or the fact that all Star Trek away teams consist of the most senior officers. :)

Yeah, I don't think that was ever supposed to be the implication--if you look at Telep's novels you see he develops the Tiger Claw's marine detachment a little (Sergeant Cogan is their commander, IIRC?))

One idea the movie had which got abandoned but is still referenced (like the Forever War time dilation stuff) is that the pilots on the 'Claw are marine *aviators*. Which actually makes a little more sense than the games suggestion that they're Air Force pilots operating off a carrier.

Much like the Space: Above And Beyond crew - which Telep also wrote novelizations for.

Yeah--it's actually in the movie, though... Maniac calls Rosie "Marine" at one point. And it shows up in a mess of the advertising for some reason.

a qustion regarding the read through...i just finished Wing Commander movie novel, by Peter Telep. I will start Pilgrim Stars today...in these posts there is refrence to "Wing Commander Confederation Handbook"...and i dont have a copy of that...is it required, am i missing important info regarding story of background info?

The Confederation Handbook is basically the "manual" for the movie. It's similar to Claw Marks or Star*Solider--full of articles and ship stats and e-mails and so forth from the Wing Commander universe. It gives you a lot of the history for the 'Pilgrim' stuff that the later novels refer to.

got it, thanks...i guess it is good to have, with the background Pilgrim stuff...i'll start searching on ebay...
