Problems with windows 98

Hey all,

After a few years, I rediscovered Privateer in the closet and had an urge to play again.
Unfortunately, I can't get it to work. I have a boot disk, but an error shows up mentioning something about "JEMM Unloaded". My brother has been trying to help me, but we're stuck.

I'd appreciate any help.

Post your c:\autoexec.bat, C:\config.sys and c:\windows\dosstart.bat. What sound card do you have. We need to create a boot disk for P1 can't be played in windows.

We have a Sonic Impact A3D made by Diamond Multimedia systems. Hope thats enough info.
 
Sandy, First you need make a boot disk. Insert a floppy and right click on the A: drive and choose Format > Copy System files. Once you are done formating copy the c:\autoexec.bat and c:\config.sys to the floppy. Now replace the content with below. When configuring P1 sound settings first try SB16 than SB Pro. IRQ=2 DMA=3

I made the changes to the boot disk and restarted my computer, but I got an error message that the
"WINBOOTDIR environment variable missing. Driver not loaded." What do I have to do now?
 
Above the sound card settings add this
SET WINBOOTDIR=C:\WINDOWS

If you are still having problems use this command while using the boot disk.
mem /c > p1mem.txt
mem(space)/c(space)>(space)p1mem.txt
Notice the spaces. Open p1mem.txt and post the results.

Are you using a boot disk? The report shows these four programs are running.

IFSHLP
If you are using the boot disk I created for you these programs should not be there. This report does not show the CD-ROM drivers. The boot disk should only have the info I gave you. Do not place this stuff in the PC's autoexec.bat and config.sys.
 
I did exactly what you told me for the boot disk. Yes, I'm using one. I don't know if this has anything to do anything, but my version of WC:P is on floppy disks.(saw a reference to its importance on another post) I don't know why those programs showed up. Sorry.
 
WCP on floppy?! Oh, Privateer, not Prophecy.

Anyway, I recognise Win and vmm32 only from Windows, but IFSHLP and DBLBUFF seems to get automatically loaded into memory for me (Win98 original). What do they do, anyway? I think DBLBUFF has something to do with accessing FAT32 hard drives, but the presence of IFSHLP has confounded me for years.

"D002-FFFF" when starting the game (floppy version only).
This error message indicates that there is a problem with your sound card configuration. Run the INSTALL program again and select NO sound and NO music. Run the game again and see if you can get past the error message. If you can get past the error message with Sound and Music turned OFF, then you will need to run the install program again to set your sound up a second time. Be sure to know the proper address, IRQ and DMA values for your sound card before you install the game again. Incorrect IRQ values can cause this error message as well.
 
Hmm, just something Windows uses to manage files then? Does that mean it's not necessary in DOS mode? I exclude it in a step-by-step DOS boot, and I don't recall having any problems.
 
You were right. I loaded the game up without the sound and music and it worked. I've tried every combination to get the sound to work, but no luck. I checked my IRQ and DMA values as well, but I still couldn't get past the error.
 
Manually reserve IRQ5 for 'legacy ISA' in BIOS 'PnP/PCI configurations' as follows:
Switch on your computer.
During startup, when you see the Award Modular Start Up screen press Delete on your keyboard.
You see a blue setup screen with a list of options.

Using your Cursor Keys select the PNP/PCI Configuration option and press Return/Enter.
You see the PNP/PCI screen.

Select PNP OS Installed and set the value to No using Pg Up or Pg Dn.

Select Resources Controlled By and set the value to Manual.
You see a new set of options.

Select IRQ-5 Assigned To : and change from PCI/ISA PNP to Legacy ISA and press Escape to take you back to the main menu.

Select Save & Exit Setup then press Return/Enter.
Press y then press Return/Enter.

WC: Prophecy on floppy's?... Where'd you get that? Sounz like warez 2 me...;)
