Privateer - I'm starting again

Must have gotten a tech in a lousy mood last time I called Gateway, said to have a DOS CD-ROM driver was customizing my computer and would cost me $39.95.

Tried again today, got a tech in a good mood, using my system restoration cd he helped me find it and load it - I have one now!!! So I'm starting over.

So far: I have installed privateer. I have copied the priv.tre and rf.tre files to privater on C drive. I have opened the .cfg files to notepad and changed the path to =C:\privater\priv.tre (and subsequent rf.tre). I have told the game not to detect windows. I formatted a diskette, copied config.sys and autoexec.bat to A and made some modifications. They now read:

Anyone (silent warrior, wedge?) know or think this would be correct?

Lori, I've edit your bootdisk setting (see end of post). You are almost there. Your sound card may not work. It looks like you are missing your Dos drivers for your sound card. Don't worry you're most likely to have it on the installation CD for your card. Just look for it in the CD and install it. The installation program will edit your C:\Autoexec.bat file. Just remove or REM the lines from the C:\autoexec.bat and add it to your boot disk.

These are the changes I made to your sound card settings in the autoexec.bat.

See my fourth line. This is the Dos driver for my sound card. You'll need to do the same for your card. Also, look at the second line, you'll see that I have a "J201". This is so the JoyStick will work. I believe this setting should work for you too; but if not then look up the correct setting in the Device Manager.

You also do not have a DOS mouse driver in your autoexec.bat file. I think you can get away with not having it in P1. You should be able to use the "TAB Button" to get around. If you can't figure out or find your Dos driver for your mouse then try http://www.bookdisk.com. There is a universal driver there that you can try. Remember to use the LH command for you mouse. I do not know what the "PISETUP" lines are for in you Config.sys; but since they are REM out it does matter. The last line in the Config.sys Lastdrive=?. This is the last drive letter on you PC. Example: On my PC my Hard Drive has two partitions on it giving be a C and D drive. I also have two CD-ROMs, which are E, and F drives. So my Lastdrive=F. You'll need to do the same. Go to My Computer and see how many drive letters you have and edit the Lastdrive=?.

Below is your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files after the change I made. The below them is my Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files. I posted them for your reference. I start play P1 last night so I know my bootdisk works.

I guess it depends on what sound card you have, but I'm fairly sure only old cards use an IRQ of 7. Well, maybe now that everything runs in Windows, things have changed but I've always believed that IRQ = 5 and High DMA = 5. ie:

No! The last line in config.sys is your DOS CD driver! ;) In any case, I'm sure MSCDEX.EXE belongs in autoexec.bat

I redid my .bat file and my .sys files to reflect what you gave me. One notation - earlier in your post below the sound card entries for my pc, you have the line: SET CTSYN=C:\WINDOWS , but in your instructions below that for me on my pc, you don't have that line. Should it be there?

My sound card is a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audio PCI 64D. My mouse is a Microsoft or IBM PS/2. I'm rather confused about your instruction on what to do with my sound card and rem from c:, etc.

My lastdrive is D, so I changed that. In your .bat, where you have REM -- the lines below are for the SB sound card, does this line get put in verbatim or are you implying that I need to put in information pertinent to MY pc?

Can't think any more today if I missed anything lololol - you know, chick, blonde and all :eek:)

Lori, here a link for the mouse driver. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdir.htm#mouse.
On the root of the C: drive create a directory call Mouse.
Download the mouse.com to c:\mouse. Edit your a:\autoexec.bat file adding this line somewhere near the buttom.

LH C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.COM

This should give you a mouse in DOS.

Lori, First it looks like the the CD-ROM player did not like the driver you are using. Where did you get it from. Try the universal CD-ROM driver from http://www.bootdisk.com. I autoexec.bat is arrange in the wrong order. It should look this (See Below). I just notice you are use a backward \D:CD1 instead of /D:CD1. See the should be "LH C:\CDROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:CD1". Notice that there a space between mscdex.exe and /D:CD1. The samething is happening with the Config.sys the line should be "DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM\MTMCDAI.SYS /D:CD1" and not "DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM\MTMCDAI.SYS/C:CD1/V".

Now the sound card. Did you extract the Pci64.zip file to "C:\Sound". The Pci64.zip is a compress file which holds many difference files in it. To open this file and the extract the files in it you'll need a program call WinZip. If you don't have this then go to http://www.download.com and use the search feature there and download WinZip and install it. Make sure you get the most current version. I have version 7.0.

Do you have a directory call SBPCI in your C: Drive (C:\SBPCI). If you do are these files in it "SNDSCAPE.INI, APINIT.COM, APLOAD.EXE". If so let try change SPCI64 settings in the autoexec.bat too this

If you don't have a C:\SBPCI directory then we don't need the "SET SBPCI=C:\SBPCI" so place a REM before it. A "REM" is a is short for "REMARK". This is use so you can a place statement in a script that the computer wont try to execute.
So when I use a line like "Below are my CD-ROM drivers" If I don't place a REM before this line the computer will try to execute this line, but this line is not a command so it will return a error messeage "bad command or file name" which we don't want to see.

The config.sys lets try this.

privateer - getting discouraged

John, the Cd-rom driver is the manufacturer installed one.

I have winzip, yes I unzipped the files and that all looks to be in order.

Yes, I have an SBPCI directory in C. The files within are: application files - mt32, sbcfg, sblegacy, sbload, sbmixer, sbsetup, sbtest, bin file - sbpci.bin, config files - spbci, sbsetup, ms-dos file - sbinit. I do not have APLOAD.EXE, APINIT.COM, & SNDSCAPE.INI. I did a file search looking for SNDSCAPE and didn't find any.

I set up my .sys and .bat files exactly as you said to, then booted w/A. I still got "Error: cannot read config file "SNDSCAPE.INI". PCI Audio driver NOT loading."

Tried to play priv and got "insufficient DOS mem available to run privateer."

I REALLY REALLY DO appreciate your assisting me, PLEASE don't give up on me okay? I think you are my only hope in getting this game running - not to exclude anyone else on here that can help!!!! Hope I didn't forget anything.

Lori, Is the CD-ROM working now? I use to have a SB AUDIO PCI so I should figure this out by the end of the day. As far a memory goes here a command to help us see what happen.

"mem /c /p" and "mem /c > p1mem1.txt"

mem will tell us how memory is being alloacated.

"mem /c /p" will display this info on your screen.

"mem /c > p1mem.txt" will redirect that info to a text file call p1mem.txt. Use the boot disk we created and from the C: drive type "mem /c > p1mem.txt". You can now go back to windows and open this file; paste the result here for us to see.
Remember spaces are important.

Lori, let try this for the sound card. Replace the sound card setting Autoexec.bat file with this--

Also in the autoexec.bat use this for the new SET PATH line.

Lori, This "mem" command needs to be done using the boot disk we create not from the Reboot to MS-MSDOS. The boot disk is how you are going to play this game. If you are doning it from the boot disk then post your autoexec.bat and confif.sys files again.

Thank you, John, for your patience. I will try this one and wish me luck....will be very careful w/the spacing, I do realize that it is important. Just to verify w/you, I boot my puter w/the bootdisk. Once loaded, I switch to c drive, then privateer dir, then type priv, and I should get the game right?

I'm feeling my way around here a little bit and starting to learn what lines on the .sys and .bat are for what. I've printed out your files and printed out mine. I'm going to study both, try some changes myself (what the heck ;o) and see what I can get.

You are really helping me but I don't want to burn you out or have you give up on me :eek:) So take a needed break. Please, though, keep coming and looking for me to see if we can figure this out further, okay? I might just try to enter your files and make minor modifications to suit my computer.
