Priv 2 Sound problems

I have an old Compaq Deskpro 4000 here in the office with a PII 233 running Win98SE w/64 MB ram and Essoniq sound built on the board. I'm running Priv2 Deluxe and it runs fine except in combat I get this weird echo effect. Doesn't happen in the cutscenes or planetside only in combat. Any thoughts?
 
I notice it mostly during voice, but I think the sound effects do it as well. Someone will start talking for example, "You are cleared all the way in." At about the point that they get to "...cleared," the message begins again, so it is someone hard to hear. "You are" from the "first" message is clear and "way in" is clear from the second, but everything else is hard to make out. I believe the guns do it as well, but it is a little harder to tell. It only happens while I'm in flight, not during anything planet side or during cutscenes.
 
That's... odd....

I've never seen that error before. It could be a driver issue; go to Compaq's web site and see if there are updated drivers for the sound chip.
